could it actually be the fan itself? the only way i know of testing that is directly hooking it up to some power. just a thought as you say the car is 18 years old!
heres a question for you lot while im here: ive been told the justy doesnt have an o2 sensor, it uses a vacuum sensor in the airbox instead and a couple of sensors in the distributor for timing & fuel/air. is this true? im confused because of code 32 on the list

Pretty sure my 88 has an o2 sensor stuck in the manifold.

Sorry I haven't posted the outcome and have been a stranger as of late. I tried to do the diagnostic and retrieve codes but the plack plug...came right out of the loom. So now I cannot get my trouble codes until I have the dealer or an electrician put it back together. As far as the O2 sensor is concerned I believe the Justy has two of them. One obvious sensor sticking right out of the exhaust manifold and then I believe another right around the 2nd catalytic convertor. I know this is the wrong string and category for this question but since this string is getting a lot of activity I'll ask here: Does anyone know how to adjust the idle speed on the '87 carb'd cars? I don't know if I have the Hitachi or Nissan carby but I do know that the state emissions facility denied me a test because my idle is at 1500 RPM. *ugh* Is there a fast idle screw/jet that is easily accessed? I am still sourcing a proper repair manual and I think I may have tracked down a factory book but until then......

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, dude! I know there is. I buy up half of the Justy items on eBay. I didn't want to incite a bidding war with fellow members.

Sorry Dude! I just tried to help. The asking price on the manual is a bit high (So is the shipping). I have seen a couple of 87 manuals on eBay for much less in the past. I don't think you will have much competition for it if you want it....At least I hope not!! I e-mailed the seller looking for the last 2 books of the 4 book factory service manual set (book 3 sections 4&5 and book 4 section 6) for a 1990 Justy...No luck!...said he could get them but, not for what I wanted to pay ($45.00 + media mail shipping)...He said, It was not "Profitable".... Oh well!...I guess I'll keep looking. So...Your the guy who buys the "other half" of the Justy stuff on eBay, I knew you were out there somewhere Again, Sorry for my major "Brain Fart" . I was just trying to help ya out. If I see another 87 manual I'll PM you if this one doesn't work out. Good Luck, Jim

S'cool Jim, I know you meant well but yeah, some things are better for PM. Speaking of that, I think I'm going to start using the one on one messaging a little more but I do enjoy the group forums so much.

So there are actually two idle adjusting screws on the carb, both on the rear of the carb and a pain to get to. Also involved in the idle system is the "idle up" circuit which is supposed to increase idle by about 200 or 300 RPM when any of the major load electrical components are on (lights, etc). This system has never seemed to work very good for me, and I just tend to try to increase the idle speed a bit to compensate. It's kind of hard to describe where the screws are, but the are both on the rear and closer to the driver's side of the carb. I have never been able to get my idle really smooth, that's why I am going to swap over to fuel injection when I get a chance.

Thank you Scoobaru. Yeah, I am finding that many things on this car are tough to find, tough to get to and are better left to the smaller hands of the people indigenous to the lands where the car was made or else the wives & daughters of the people that mostly write about them here in this forum. I guess I'll relax by listening to this Dr. John record a few times and then go down to the garage for a little 'seek & destroy' with the droplight and a small screw driver. I suppose I should perform this after the car has warmed up to operating temperature....? Also, I don't suppose you remember which way is rich and which way is lean do you? Like from the driver's perspective. And do you adjust both of them equally? I imagine one is probably for the primary venturi and the other for the secondary. Oh bugger.

Sorry, can't remember which way is rich/lean. As for the two screws, I believe the one is for the regular idle and the other is for the high idle (activated by previously mentioned idle up system). As I said, I kind of ignored the idle up system, since I don't know if my idle up solenoid was working properly. So basically I just adjusted the "regular" idle adjustment up a bit higher to compensate. Note that I pretty much had to remove the air cleaner housing to get to these screws, but for the vacuum system to work as it should the air cleaner housing must be in place. So basically it was, remove air cleaner, tweak screw half turn, replace air cleaner, start car, check idle, then repeat. Good times....

Holy conole. Well it's gonna be four or five days before I get a chance to fiddlef#(k with that but it sounds like a tedius tuning pain. On the bright side I did just source a factory shop manual so I will be able to tell which is normal idle and which is fast idle, soon enough. I'll post again as soon as I've had a chance to try it out. Thanks for your assistance, as always it is greatly appreciated.

i know its a bit late but it may well be the thermo switch as on my old 89 justy that went fairly sharpish- i dunno what parts are like over there but it was simple to get a switch in the uk and justys are quite rare over here

personally i have deleted all that vacume crap on the air cleaner so that it can't go wrong. I just plugged the hose that connects to the bottom of that, and run with a peice of metal holding the paper element down. And it still passes emissions
