I am not sure on the 93, but I believe on my 88 the 4wd is vacuum actuated. There are a couple of vacuum lines that run from a solenoid under the hood at the top-rear of the engine compartment (top of firewall) down to the tranny. Is this a problem that just started happening or did you buy it like this?

Change the solenoids on the firewall just next to the wiper motor. When the windings on the solenoids fail, you can temporarily take out the hoses going into the solenoids, and 4WD disengages. Look for the one with a plastic -T , coming out of the manifold. Unattach, start the engine, drive a couple of meters, and put it back on. Your car will be in 2WD until you press that button again. Best to change the solenoids though.

I just bought a 91 and had to completely revamp the fwd (finally worked) - there are a few things that could be wrong
1 - vaccuum solenoid actuator valve fried / stuck 2 - vaccum leak (3 possible tubes) 3 - 4wd sensor stuck on 4 - elecrical problem (switch in shifter broken, fuse burnt, connector corroded 5 - bad manifold vaccuum - the actual fwd is actuated by the manifold vaccum pressure - the electrical part just switches this negative pressure to actuate the 4wd 6 - actual 4wd engagement mechanism stuck - worst - i think this vehicle has probs with this (because no center diff = stress)- mine clunks pretty hard when it disengages
on mine there werre actually 3 seperate reasons the 4wd stopped working 1- switch in shifter would not connect to ground (bad switch, replaced with radio shack toggle in dash)
2 - bad vaccuum hose between intake manifold and electric / vaccum solenoid actuator (it has 3 tubes, 4 wires, and two things that look like guitar tuner knobs on the right side of car near windshield) this is most likely imo
3 sensor stuck - your sensor may just be stuck - mine wasnt hooked up but it is a mechanical switch that senses 4wd position.
good luck, justin
