howdy. could someone please post or send me a picture of the vacuum setup for their 4wd justy? i've got an '89 and i don't think it's set up right - i can't get the 4wd to turn on - although i did just get the car to run!
is there a troubleshooting guide for the 4wd?
note - chiltons sucks...
thanx!!

I don't have a diagram, but perhaps I can help you...
When I bought my Justy the 4wd would not engage. It turned out to have two problems: 1) On the 4wd button, a wire had come loose, which needed to be soldered back on. 2) On the solenoid unit (under hood next to wiper motor), one of the solenoids had failed.
I found the easiest way to test to see if the switch/solenoid was at fault, was to bypass them completely. Remove the hoses from the solenoid unit. Attach the input hose (the one thats NOT coming from the transmission) to one of the two hoses going down to the transmission. Your 4wd light should come on. If not, attach it to the other hose and see if the light comes on. Once you've worked out which line engages 4wd, apply vacuum to the other line and it should disengage. If it doesn't come on/off in either situation, then you have another problem, eg the 4wd indicator light isn't working, theres not enough vacuum, or there is a problem in the transmission.
Until I fixed the switch & solenoid, I used this method to engage & disengage 4wd, simply by opening up the hood and applying vacuum to the appropriate line running to the transmission.
Try this first and see what happens.

i'm pretty sure i figured out the vacuum setup - nice! ;D ;D
now onto the next problem...
the light comes on but doesn't stay on - i'm pretty sure that the switch in the shifter knob is bad - not a wire that needs to be soldered, but it feels like the switch itself isn't catching - when i jam a scredriver next to the '4wd' cap it stays on. so here's the questions:
how do i get the knob off of the shifter?
and
how will i be able to tell if the 4wd is working? what does it 'feel' like versus 2wd operation?
thanx!!

The switch is held in place by a small screw found at the front of the gearknob. If you remove the screw you may be able to pry the switch out with a small flat-ended screwdriver, but most likely the wires will be too short to get it out far enough, in which case you will have to remove the knob.
The knob is held in place by a pin which runs from side to side. I removed the pin by hammering a very small bolt in there, forcing the pin out the other side. The wires run down the gearstick in a groove, then the gearstick is covered with black plastic. You'll have to cut the plastic to get it off, and expose the wires. I recovered mine afterwards with black electrical tape.
As far as the "feel" of the 4wd, there isn't a noticable difference when you are driving straight on a road. Find a grassy/muddy/snowy patch and you'll quickly see the difference. Spin the wheels in 2wd and then try again in 4wd, you should notice a huge increase in traction.
I've only owned my Justy a few weeks but I've already driven in quite a bit of snow, and I'm very impressed with its handling & traction. I bought a set of Kumho I'zen KW17 snow tires and it grips great (and so far these are the only tires I can find in the 165/65/13 size, except for Bridgestone Potenza RE92, but from reviews I've read they are supposed to be terrible tires).

very cool man! thanx!! that's what i had figured, but before i beat the shifter to remove the pin i wanted to make sure - sorta like an old volvo w/ overdrive.
i wonder how mine'll handle in the snow - i've got 175's in the back and 155's in the front....hmmmmm...
this isn't a 4wd question, but might you know where the engine testers are in the engine compartment? the chilton's lists the engine codes but nowhere does it say which connectors to short/connect...?
thanx!!

On the carbed ones theres a set of connectors under thedash... green I think....
wrt the tire size... OWCH! there is no centre diff... the front and rears are locked when in four wheel. you will be putting some serious stress on the drivetrain if you encounter traction with that set-up!

I just bought a 91 and had to completely revamp the fwd (finally worked) - there are a few things that could be wrong
1 - vaccuum solenoid actuator valve fried / stuck 2 - vaccum leak (3 possible tubes) 3 - 4wd sensor stuck on 4 - elecrical problem (switch in shifter broken, fuse burnt, connector corroded 5 - bad manifold vaccuum - the actual fwd is actuated by the manifold vaccum pressure - the electrical part just switches this negative pressure to actuate the 4wd 6 - actual 4wd engagement mechanism stuck - worst - i think this vehicle has probs with this (because no center diff = stress)- mine clunks pretty hard when it disengages
on mine there werre actually 3 seperate reasons the 4wd stopped working 1- switch in shifter would not connect to ground (bad switch, replaced with radio shack toggle in dash)
2 - bad vaccuum hose between intake manifold and electric / vaccum solenoid actuator (it has 3 tubes, 4 wires, and two things that look like guitar tuner knobs on the right side of car near windshield) this is most likely imo
3 sensor stuck - your sensor may just be stuck - mine wasnt hooked up but it is a mechanical switch that senses 4wd position.
good luck, justin

4wd, 3 tubes, 4 wires,.. it would be cool to have a picture of this. the manuals are probably all crap.
justycrusader said: " vaccuum hose between intake manifold and electric / vacuum solenoid actuator (it has 3 tubes, 4 wires, and two things that look like guitar tuner knobs on the right side of car near windshield) " . . I got one 91 ecvt with almost no rust with new motor and 5speed trans. 99% done. we got the hoses and wires disconnected and don't know how to connect them.
