Normal under load or in a tarmac curve. It happened to me at all time while backing off from my snowy home alley in winter to the dry asphalt road if i disengaged too late while turning instead of disengaging while still backing in straight line. Heart stomp every time. There are 2 crowned collars in the trans that have to separate under vacuum and it is far easier (and reassuringly quiet) under no load.
But is surely abnormal if stomping under no load.

Its usually happens while slowing down,...maybe due to differing load conditions with engine breaking etc Tis on tarmac too

Try trueing your wheels, or changing to a different set of tires and rims on the rear. One of my rear wheels was a bit dented, and I would get this thump everytime I disengaged 4wd. I later changed to alloys, and the problem vanished! I still get the problem when I install those troubled 12"s. You can check by moving the rear tires to the front and vice versa, then invest in new rims.
You still have to back off the throttle, and keep the steering wheel straight when pressing that button. Cheers,
