Anyone know what might have happened and a possible fix? I was doing 70mph when I heard a klunk. I did a 360 on the freeway and slid into the ditch. I got dang lucky it didn't roll. I put it in neutral to winch it onto the tow truck. The passenger rear tire was locked up and the driver rear tire would turn a little bit then slide a couple feet. It's a 4 wheel drive manual. Is there any way to disengage the rear axles so I could drive it home?

Subaru released a TSB back in the 90s about the output shaft bearing for the rear drives haft seizing up and locking the rear wheels.
Either that or a park brake issue that made the rear brakes fail in a way that they stopped rotating.
You could disconnect the rear driveshaft from the rear end and tie it up then be sure to leave it in 2wd. If the car rolls then you know its a transmission issue.

Thanks, that must be what happened. Maybe I'll try to disconnect the drive shaft tomorrow if I can get a ride to it. Any special tools required?

No just two 12mm wrenches, a floor jack and a couple stands. Some bailing wire or zapstraps. Just undo the rear flange and bungee or zapstrap the drive shaft out of the way as the diff flange will still rotate.
Leave it in 2wd.

I got a ride to the Justy today. It moves but grinds going slow. It was almost 3 quarts low on gear oil in the transmission. The gear oil is leaking out where the driveshaft goes into the tranny. Any advice on how to stop the leak? Should the bearing be replaced and if so how do I get at? Thanks

I took off the transfer bearing case. The rear output bearing is toast. The other bearing looks ok, but I will replace it since I've got it apart. The driveshaft yoke has a gouge where the seal sits. Any advice on this?
