I'm getting ready to reassemble my rebuilt engine, and I want to make sure I'm doing this right. I had a new mechanical seal pressed in place, and I'm wondering about this ceramic disc (with rubber on one side) and the rubber bit on the mechanical seal.
Does the ceramic disc go against the water pump impeller and the two rubber parts go against one another? Or does that part go the other way, with ceramic against rubber and rubber against impeller?
Thanks in advance.

There should be two pieces of ceramic that will mate together and make the seal, If I remember right. Edit: Scratch that forget the above... The ceramic should seal against the impeller be sure to lubricate that ceramic before assembly. I wet it with coolant and it seems to be good on my rebuilt engine. I remember having a problem remembering how the oil seal went in, I guess I got it because it doesnt leak coolant or oil from the weep hole . Sorry about the confusion.

The ceramic on the impeller seal is OUT so you can see it...
It matches up to the RUBBER seal on the "mechanical" spring loaded seal you press in.
Rubber against rubber will last a short time...

Thanks guys. Pretty sure I get what you're saying. I'll try and snag a photo tonight.

Here's what the parts of my mechanical seal look like. The ceramic part is in a little rubber piece, and there's another rubber piece actually on the spring. Since the ceramic disk must be placed against the impeller, I assume this means the rubber part that surrounds the disk is supposed to go against the rubber part on the spring.

Where is it leaking from? The weep hole? If so it is the mechanical seal, to properly replace this the front cover needs to come off... not a small job. Edit... It can be done without removing the front cover, I've never been brazen enough to try, or had a tool to do it. Maybe a slide hammer, and something to grab the old seal... or maybe just mangle it... but the better way is to pull the cover. (me thinks... )
