Yeah, the carb was my original problem, then my mechanic set the timing without the test plugs connected and gave me another problem. It was running at about 50 percent power with the timing wrong, so it's strange it doesn't make a difference for you.
If your duty solenoid is ok, I would try a carb rebuild. The kit is only about $25. You need a dwell or a duty meter to properly set the idle mixture screw, so if you haven't touched it yet, leave it.

I think mine is about 2 turns out from the bottom.
This thread is really helpful for a carb rebuild.
