We have an 88 2WD carbureted manual with approximately 140,000 miles. We purchased it a few years ago and have put approximately 24,000 miles on it after initially replacing the carburetor, cap and rotor, wires and plugs, as well as the fuel filter (initially and again 5,000 miles ago).
For the first year or so it ran great. Lately, it is intermittently giving us problems that are fuel related. Usually, it isn't affected during idling, but coughs and sputters during acceleration. This started during the winter and we developed a habit of treating it with dry gas. That usually gets it worked out of "it's system" but not for very long before we are back to the problem again. We intend to change the fuel filter and spark plugs this week, but we're wondering if this is a problem that any of you have encountered and would be able to provide additional advice (?).

Dry gas?
Check the usual tune-up stuff, or replace. Sounds like you're going to do that anyways, but things to consider are:
- spark plugs and/or gap - spark plug wires, check the coil to distributor cap lead especially. Corrosion, damage, rubbed thru etc. - distributor cap/rotor, Corrosion, cracks, evidence of cross firing - ignition timing - valve adjustment - vacuum leak(s)
Once this is all tickity-boo we can proceed!

Well, he figured it out (we think). When he replaced the gaskets, he suspects that one of them had been allowing enough air to bypass that the throttle plates weren't set correctly for the lack of this leak. So far it has been running good, no indication that it will return to the problems of before. Unfortunately, before he figured it out, he got p*ssy enough to buy a replacement car, and now we are having to deal with craigslist to try to send this one off to a new owner.
Thanks for the advice on it!
