Justy sat for an entire day. When I got out to it I noticed a gasoline stain beneath the driver's seat (fuel pump area: imgur.com/Xq4YpXA ) . Hoping that I didn't completely lose a bunch of gas, I tried to start the engine. Definitely turning over but where I used to only have to partially depress the accelerator to get it started cold, I had to fully depress it and it would get REALLY CLOSE but wouldn't start. Take a break, try again, take a break, try again. figure I'm out of gas. Popped the hood and checked the gas tank vent hose in case pressure built up, forcing gas out a hose down by the pump, and as I removed the cap I hear air moving through the hose. It's been around 30-40º F lately. I plug it into the vapor canister. Next I get down to the fuel pump and see a pinhole leak in fact. I replace the hose and put a gallon of gas in. Same results: Engine turning over and ALMOST starting up when I fully depress the accelerator. I tried adding starter fluid, I had a friend try to jump start the thing, and I let the car sit for the day but just got nowhere with it. I checked the fuel fuse and it's good. If I reach down and hold the fuel pump while I cycle through the ignition, it starts up once I'm cranking the engine and a little after I stop. What is going on?

your fuel pump even running?
when you turn the key to the last position before start, what do you hear? should be like the "pitter patter of children's feet" from a ways away.
you positive you have spark?
also replace your fuel filter if you are down there. its only like 8 bucks and ensures its in good working condition.

I don't hear children's feet until after I start turning the engine over. Spark's good, so I ordered a fuel pump and filter and in the meantime I'll ride my bicycle.

you could try jumping the pump from the battery to see if the pump is dead or theres a wiring issue. maybe try again with the drivers side door open and see what that sounds like.
theres clearly a hole in some line somewhere.

It didn't start with starting fluid? You need to check spark and mechanical. Sounds like your fuel pump is working as intended. If in doubt, pull the line off the carb and put it in to a canister to make sure fuel is getting there. It will be a pitiful 2psi.

I'm getting spark for each plug, but when I pulled the fuel line from the carb and put it in a container while I cycled through with the key nothing coming out, not even a drop. Pump/filter couldn't get here faster.

But you can hear/feel the pump working?

Nothing from the pump with the key in the on position, Terry.

But you can hear/feel the pump working? Terry Just double checking before install... I believe the pump I ordered came with a filter attached. Should I go ahead and use the plastic filter as well upline or is whatever's attached at the intake end of the pump good enough? Here's a picture of the set up www.imgur.com/6d6zZgxI'm initially not sure if it will even all fit down by the tank!

Make sure you have 12volts to the pump with key on and the pump plugged in. These cars have a habit of their Fuel Punmp Control Module going funked.
Alternatively, unplug the pump and use a testlight constructed from a lowbeam headlight. The idea is you want to load the circuit.

Just to verify the engine has to be cranking to get power down to the pump.

Hey Terry, the pump ended up failing the 12v test I ran. So I replaced it and she started right up... Not to deviate from the thread subject but for some reason the idle jet on the weber I recently installed was a 60. I'm trying to drop that down (50, 45) and see if mpg goes up.
...on to the next thing!
