Hi, For the life of me I cannot insert the distributor on my Justy so it sits flush. I have a picture that shows what I am talking about. It still has to go about an eight of an inch. What am I missing? Year: 1988 Make: Subaru Model: Justy GL / RS Style / Body: Hatchback 2D Engine: 1.1L I3 2V Thanks, Steve

the cam has an off center slit in it. the distributor has an off center protrusion. its hard to tell its off center but it is. it indexes the distributor to the camshaft. grab the protrusion on the end of the distributor and rotate it over 180 degrees. it should fit in if the slot and distributor are aligned.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. When I first started trying to insert the distributor and having trouble I did notice that the slot was off centered, so like you said I made sure that the two were aligned. The protrusion is fitting in the slot, I can tell because I can't turn the rotor, it's just stopping from sitting flush. Thanks again, Steve BTW, I inherited this Justy, which had been sitting for about 5 years. For fun I thought I might try and get it started, but I'm no mechanic so it's no wonder I'm having problems.

sometimes the slots have a chamfer to them and it will bind up if the dizzy is out of position 180 degrees. give it a shot and see what happens. if you are positive its all aligned, then something else is up, they can be a little fussy to go back in but never more than a good shove.
can you zoom out so we can see the rest of the motor? you have a vac advance dizzy which is 88 and earlier. im curious as to if this is the wrong dizzy for the motor.

When I got the car there were 2 dizzys behind the backseat, along with some other parts. One looked used and the other one looked new. I have tried inserting each one w/ the same problems. Thanks again, Steve

take a look at this thread subarujusty.proboards.com/thread/5745/help-me-identify-justy?page=1&scrollTo=36333notice that on your car, theres a bunch of vaccum lines that go to the passanger side of the car from the manifold. they are kind of bunched together. notice how some lines go to the right and left of the solenoid rack on the firewall? on the 88 and older, they do not have that solenoid rack in the link above. yours does. maybe you have an 89+ engine in your 88 or older car. if thats the case youd need the non-vacuum advance distributor.

Mine has that rack and it's an 88. My friend had a lot of justys and of his first gens, some do some don't. Some even have more solenoid vacuum stuff because they were originally sold in California. Smog stuff. And unlike those pics. Some 88s lack the relay box located by the master cylinder. In the 80s, Subaru would just throw last year's parts on this years cars if they had overstock. Allegedly. I was also told that dealerships would have this inconsistency on the lots. Ha ha.
