The previous owner said this started happening when he (or his son) installed an aftermarket radio in the car. He claimed it's not an actual problem, but I'd like to verify myself. When idling, the check engine light flickers on and off irregularly. I saw in another thread that a poor ECU ground can cause something like this, so I'll be checking that out at some point.
I'm a little disappointed at finding no sticky threads with information on regular maintenance type things like how to retrieve engine codes. Maybe I'm not looking in the right areas? I have a '91 Justy 1.2 liter, 4WD 5-speed. I'm new to this car and would love to read more about its intricacies.
Little help?

It could be low oil pressure. How many miles are on the car and was the engine ever rebuilt? Justys are notorious for having oil pressure issues.
We are lacking in useful stickies, but ask and you will get an answer.
Welcome to the forum, good luck with your new justy.

Thanks! So, the check engine light could indicate oil pressure even though it has a separate oil pressure light?
The previous owner said it was 126k miles (rather than 226k), and judging by the pristine interior, I tend to believe him. No mention of an engine rebuild.
I've seen talk here and on Dusty's Justys about the oil pump issues. I'm not squeamish mechanically and am plenty skilled, so I'm not afraid to replace that if I have to. Is that an engine-out procedure?

What oil light?
Yes, flickering cel at idle can indicate low oil pressure. It has to get pretty low for that light to start flickering so once it does, you have problems.
I'd say your due for an engine rebuild at that mileage.
The oil pump can easily be changed without taking the engine out. However that may not fix your problem. You might need to replace your rod and main bearings along with your chain guide to get real results.
That being said, the oil pump is easy to replace so try that first.

Damn. I thought for sure there was an oil light in that instrument cluster...

Alright, but regardless, I'd like to know how to pull error codes. How do I do that?

And, uh, this oil pressure gauge. Upon closer inspection today, the Check Engine light doesn't flicker. It flashes 3 times quickly in succession, and repeats. By the googling I've done, this would be a code 3, but that code doesn't exist. If it's code 33, that's Vehicle Speed Sensor, which I'd be surprised if this car had instead of a cable-driven speedo. I'm officially filing it under "not worried about it" for now.

Sorry, my mistake. I completely forgot about the cel. One of the first things I did was pull the bulb out of it because I had a code that wouldn't clear. It sounds like your "memory read" connectors may be plugged in. The cel should be on solid if you have a fault. Try checking the connectors, here's a thread on it. subarujusty.proboards.com/thread/3304-Dave

Wow. I'm surprised that both my '02 WRX and '91 Justy have these connectors. Thanks! I'll take care of that today.
