I appreciate any help I can get to figure out why my 1990 Subaru Justy (Fuel Injected, 4wd, Manual trans) will not start. I drove it yesterday with no problems. However, when I tried to start it this morning I turned the key over and the stereo turned on but seemed a bit louder than normal so I turned it down and then off. Then I went to start her up and though I heard a sound (kind of like a blown fuse but not quite) that seemed to come from the dash. (I checked all of the fuses and they look great) So I switched the key back off and tried to start it again but now I get nothing. No dash lights, stereo, fuel pump or starter come on. The only thing that works when I have the key in is the door dinger. I have been noticing that from time to time when I turn the key over to try and start it, sometimes the starter won't turn over and will take a few tries turning the key off and then on again to start. My guess would be that it not starting now and this existing issue are connected. Any help you all can provide is greatly appreciated.
On a separate note, have any of you experienced a rattling sound from the engine when engaging/disengaging the clutch or when holding the engine at about 3,000 RPM? If so, what causes that rattling? It does not seem to happen when the car is sitting in neutral except occasionally when you rev the engine and then let off on the gas. Lastly, do any of you know a good Subaru mechanic near Salem, Oregon? Most of the stuff I can do myself but I have a 15 month old child that tends to take up most of my spare time so it would be nice to know of a good Subaru mechanic in my area. Thank you all for your help and have a super fantastic day! Austin

I have an 88 sevice manual I'm not sure how much difference there is in the wiring diagrams but it looks like there should be a big main fuse 60amp. I would check that first, then if that is ok I would look for a connector that feeds the ignition and the starter solenoid after reading for a while on here it sounds like that connector can be faulty some times. Although because your having issue with many components I would think that it would most likely be either a main fuse or your ignition switch. Oh, Have you checked your Battery terminal connections?

I would second the battery terminals. That "fuse noise" you heard could be the battery terminals zapping from a bad connection.
Is the rattle noise from the clutch the same as when you rev it?

I'd check the ignition and inhibitor switch. Sounds like ignition if the fuses/relays are good. Had to bypass the starter solenoid part of the ignition on mine...
