The motor in my '88 4wd has a bad thrust bearing, and will need to be rebuilt. I picked up an '89 parts car with a solid running motor, and intend to swap it into my '88 while I rebuild the original motor.
Will the '89 motor fit right into my '88?
What if anything will I need to swap over with the new motor?
Anybody have any words of wisdom they can send my way? This will be my first motor swap.

slomo,
is it a carbed 89?
if so it will fit no prob. if injected, pick up a head gasket and use the head from you 88, or get a spare head...

yes its a carbed 89. Im taking the motor from a 2wd and put it in my 4wd. Im thinking that ill leave the tranny and header in place, and transplanting the new motor with intake and carb intact. I know its not that simple but will that general plan work?

I know its not that simple but will that general plan work? For the most part that should work. The '88 and '89 carbs are slightly different and I think the main electrical plug to each might be different shaped. Each one has four wires if I remember correctly, so you will have to make sure the proper wires are connected.

What Ferox said... The 4wd transmission from your 88 will bolt right up if you want to keep the 4wd while you rebuild your motor or whatever... There are some minor differences in intake headers, I can't remember when they come up. But keeping the carb that came with the car should solve any issue, if the headers are not the same and you keep the 89 header on the 89 head. Look for a exhaust port that runs along the distributor side of the head... I think that is the difference. Maybe it's a water jacket... Can't remember, had to plug it once...
