Hey all... I have this 93 that is leaking gear oil once it's hot. I can run around town and it's fine. I noticed yesterday that when I remove the dipstick, there is a tremendous amount of pressure built up in the tranny. I looked at my 88, and there is a drain tube from the pressure vent on the top of the tranny, but my 93 just has a rubber stopper. Should there be a drain tube? Is there some change in the transmission from 88 to 93 that would make the vent obsolete? I'm thinking that the car is running a little hot, so maybe that's the source of the pressure? What I want to o is take the stopper off and replace it with a tube, too, but I know that if the pressure is too great, it will still leak - but that seems better than forcing oil out through the main seal or wherever it's coming from when the engine is hot and there is pressure. Once the pressure subsides, there's no leak. Any experience or advice would be appreciated. Attachments:

We haven't heard from you for a while.

Hey Ferox! Yeah, back in a Justy. Feels good. I got that old cracked head out of this one last Spring and replaced the gasket and put in a machined, clean head and new valves... and had some fuel delivery problems afterwards. I drove a truck from April 2013 until a month ago or so... until it blew a freeze plug that is HARD to get to. So I went after the injectors... pulling the rail back and replacing them... until I got 3 good ones in there and all was well. Sort of. Now that I've put some miles on it, I'm fussing with this leak. Any idea why anyone would plug that vent? It's puzzling. Maybe the subtle hot-running issue was causing gear oil loss out of the vent, so they plugged it? So dumb. I'm guessing this one's been running hot for a long time... thus the cracked head. Thanks for responding so quickly... I'm going to make another post soon about the intermittent fuel issue I'm having now... seems like air intrusion. So... I'm off to replace that plug with a bit of tubing. We'll see if it gushes or not.

The vent tube should not be plugged. Gearboxes and rear ends are neutral in pressure.
Here's an idea. Back when I couldn't figure out my dipstick for the trans and how to read it, I overfilled my trans. By a lot. When I hit the highway, (80km/h+) it started ejecting oil out of the vent tube.
Some time later I decided to drain the trans completely, fill it up with the recommended capacity (2.8l I think) then check my dipstick and see where it was at. After that, I had no oil ejection issues. There is a chance somebody had the same issue as I did and never adjusted the level but plugged the vent instead.

That's pretty good logic I guess. I hope that my seals weren't compromised by the pressure. I thought the capacity on these was 3.4 liters, though?
"Oh, it's leaking from HERE! Well, I'll just put a plug on that, then! I'm a genius! "

I'm just surprised some vacuum tube plug managed to hold enough pressure to blow past the seals instead of launching the plug out.
