Dear Justy Enthusiasts,
I have a 1992 FWD two door carb, and I have just found a 1992 AWD four door EFI in the wrecker!
I would like to try and save as much as I can from the car that is in the wrecker... in particular I would like to convert my FWD into an AWD.
Questions:
1) Is it worth it to replace a fully functioning Carburated engine with a EFI engine of unknown functionality (I don't even know if the one in the wrecking yard can be made to run!)
2) How difficult is it to convert a FWD to a AWD? I need the rear axles, differential, transmission, what else? Do I need to take the ECU (car brain?)
If it ain't broke, don't fix it... I'm wary of disassembling a Justy that is already working...
Does anybody want me to pull some parts for you?
Cheers, Loki.

Answers: 1-No,all wiring & computer are not compatible 2a-6/10, gotta remove engine 2b-driveshaft, solenoids(vacuum), gearshift switch 2c-No, but maybe run a light to 4wd sensor

The FWD body is physically different, no mount for the drive shaft. Maybe other differences - Somebody here did it once.. NOT worth the hassle in my opinion.

Terry,
For curiosity sake...
I have never seen a 2wd Justy... you mention the body is different. Does it lack the center diff hanger mounts? and the what about the "torque bar/anti squat" beam mounts on the diff? Is it just the weld nuts and holes missing? or is the stamping different?

That's interesting, I always thought the were the same chassis. I'll have to look at my 2wd closer now.

Matt, From what I remember the mount for the steady bearing is not there. I don't know about the rear suspension, sway bar or differential mounts. I would think they are different. I'm pretty sure all second gens have the mounts for the rear swaybar (the threaded holes), and I know my first gen does not.
We need some concrete evidence and pictures, here.

This uhm.. Somewhat literate post is quoted from here. I have done a 2wd to 4wd conversion on a justy as my first (4wd)one got too rusty to save so i found a rust free 2wd car my luck was that they were both 2dr.1991's so it was a snap to do for me ( keep in mind i had 2 hoists and could do the swap with the cars side by side ). You will need to use the 4wd front spindles, ,frt.brakes,frt. struts, front axles. and all front susp. and subframe bits . The engine can be from either car but you will delete one engine mount from the 2wd because the 4wd is slightly different mount arangement however this is not an issue. ,standard trans from 4wd (Now is a good time to do a clutch),rear output /driveshaft/hanger assem. and rear susp and rear hubs from 4wd all bolts into the 2wd car , retain the rear struts( if you like) they are the same, all mounting points are there but there is slight difference in engine mount/trans mount so use the 4wd ones only. use gauge cluster from 4wd(if you want the 4wd indicator) and add some wires to 2wd car to opperate 4wd unit (i simply swapped the whole wiring harness thats behind the dash etc. and the one that goes into the engine bay, which is more work than nessasary but my 2wd donnor had some major electrical issues anyway )I used 2 cars same year and bodystyle !!! the swap was a sucess as I drive it to work every day. I will tell you this...IT TOOK ME,A PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC 3 FULL 10 HR DAYS ,IN A PROFESSIONAL SHOP WITH TWO HOISTS TO COMPLETE THIS TASK! I will add i fixed lots of little stuff along the way too. IT CAN BE DONE ! IT IS WORTH DOING IF YOU HAVE 2 CARS TO USE FOR THE SWAP AS I DID.HAVE FUN !!! Terry

I can get some pictures when I find some time to crawl under my parts car.
I call bs on the front suspension being different between the fwd and 4wd, I just swapped all mine over from a fwd, the only thing that might be different is the brakes if the fwd has the 12" wheels and smaller brakes.
I'm strictly speaking gen 2 however, I can't vouch for gen 1.

I agree, the suspension will not be different. He probably just dropped the whole front cradle with everything attached.

Ok, here we go, I have photographic evidence.... Gen 2, 4wd, 4 door, drive shaft mount. Yeah it's muddy, I just raced last weekend. Gen 2, 2wd, 2 door, drive shaft holes are there and are currently being used for a super high tech racing exhaust hanger from the previous owner. Diff support mount on the 4wd. All the same holes are there on the 2wd model, the nuts are even welded in. I think this settles it, but if anyone wants more pics just let me know. -Dave
