1986 Justy 4wd RS with EF10.
So as the weather is getting colder and colder here, the performance of my Justy is getting worse and was absolutely shocking this morning.
I'll preface the issue by saying over the summer the car ran like a dream, no real issues at all. Recently is a different story. I regularly drive to my girlfriends place approximately 20km away, and this is a mix of city and rural driving.
The problem: engine surges and low power/low maximum speed. Often when cold the car will start fine, get going fine and after 500m driving will start surging as if it isn't getting any fuel. But if I pull over to the roadside and idle for 30-60s, the car will then accelerate away fine, up to 60/70kmh and then it will again start the surging/shuddering and slowly it will lose power until the speed drops low enough that I pull over and repeat the process.
I have noticed when it is having an episode, if I take the car out of gear and press on the accelerator, nothing happens. The rpm gauge will sit at say 2,500rpm but won't go any higher. It stays this way until stopped for a few seconds and then it will rev as normal.
This morning was particularly cold here and it drove the worst it ever has. Left girlfriends place on open road with 100kmh speed limit, the car started fine and got up to 70kmh (seems to be the max speed at the moment) but then surging started. I would then pull off, wait 30 seconds, but when it would accelerate away fine it would quickly (100-200m later) start shuddering again. Some times I pulled out and it coughed/almost stalled and I had to stop and start over. As you can imagine, trying to drive 20km home this morning starting and stopping so often, was VERY frustrating. This was after warming up the car for almost 10 minutes as I knew the cold would be a problem.
Interestingly enough, once I reached the city limits where the speed limit drops to 60kmh, the car was fine and I had no problems for the remaining 5kmh.
Any ideas where to start? I've been looking through threads but I'm stumped as the car will go fine one minute, and then terribly the next. This happens at any fuel level and any time of the day provided the weather is cool. If it makes any difference, it has been running hotter than usual lately but only on some trips. Have checked fluids and all are at normal levels.
Thanks!
