Hi everyone,
I have a little problem shifting and i think its got to do with the clutch being broken somehow. The car is an 89 4wd 2dr 5speed
Symptoms: when at a stop, i can depress the clutch and it feels marginally stiffer than normal and i swear it wont go all the way down like it normally does. Then when trying to get into first gear the car acts like the clutch isnt being used at all. its just the same as if you tried to shove it into gear without using the left pedal.
when this happens if i shut off the car and put it into gear and start it again, about 75% of the time i can sit there and shift into/out of gear no problem.
Some times when i come to a stop i revv match into first gear to make sure i at least can leave the stop light...and with the clutch depressed, it makes this horrid squealing noise like metal on metal. really ugly sound.
Additionally, when im shifting into any gear other than first this same "act like you arent using the clutch" phenomenon happens. so the 1-2 upshift, 2-3, 3-4 and downshifts too.
Also, when this no-shifting condition happens i can "pump" the clutch pedal with 0 affect on the car. id imagine that if the clutch were working correctly and i rapidly "pumped" the clutch pedal the car would start bucking wildly.
Diagnostics ive done: i replaced the clutch cable since i thought it might be a cable problem. no dice. also i took out the starter (great inspection port by the way) and had someone work the clutch as i watched the pressure plate move to make sure it wasnt a broken strap. it all checked out normal.
I dialed in the cable freeplay and its still happening.
I know thats a hell of a novel's worth of reading but any help would be appreciated.
