either way, its a trans strip and lots of wee metal bits to clean out of the corners.

Hey there, first off let me say I LOVE my Justy.. I drive it over my 08 Grand Cherokee. So the problem is I drive the car quite hard. Recently I was driving in the sand dunes. I stopped the vehicle while in 4wd then tried to drive forward. Heard a bang and after just grinding and no movement. Tried pushing (its not heavy and had 2 guys) no go. Front axles seized. Got a truck to tow it forward and axles broke free but now only rear wheel drive. I am assuming this means my transfer case is broken. Can anyone give some suggestions? and where I could get a new one. I am in Northern Canada. I have a similar situation, I hope anyone with insight can help before I order the $250 replacement transfer case. First off, I have been putting off repacking my wheel bearings for months. I know that is a stupid thing to do- I am not sure if it is correlated. I heard some clamor underneath the driver seat and figured I would have it looked at on Saturday, but on the way home I was driving downhill on a windy road between 35-40m/h and the front left wheel just starting whizzing and grinding, kind of like when the transmission goes. All the wheels turned, and I was able to get home by engaging the 4 wheel drive. I brought it into the shop this morning and the guy kept telling me how cool the car is (which always feels nice), then checked all the drive shafts and they felt solid. He then elevated the wheels off the ground and had me accelerate- the front wheels had no power, wheel actually, I forgot to ask about the passenger side, but I don't think it was moving. Is this a bearing thing? Did I strip the axle? He said it's a transfer case. If the passenger wheel didn't move, then it is clearly not down on the hub end. Any recommendations?

It is pretty much covered in this thread... ... Open the hood, Have a friend disengage the 4wd, make sure it doesn't drive forward, then while he is firmly applying the park brake , put it in drive. if you lean in over the engine between the firewall and the intake you can see the green part of the cv joints. Which ever one is turning is the side with the stripped outer hub, the splines on the hub strip, it is a fairly common thing. easy enough to replace too!

Did I strip the axle? He said it's a transfer case. If the passenger wheel didn't move, then it is clearly not down on the hub end. Any recommendations? Probably, Get a new mechanic Not necessarily... As stated by Gearheadeh, read through the above post. The fact 4wd GOT YOU HOME, suggests all is fine and well with the RWD portion (including the "transfer case" which is housed within the "transaxle case"). Very likely you are looking at stripped hubs where the one front axle meets the hub. There is the slim chance there is front differential damage, which has been reported before, and could cause similar issues... Fire your mechanic, or ask him/her to look up how power is moved through the drivetrain before making any diagnostic... And do some reading up here... there was a not to distant past thread where a presumed spun hub ended up being a broken front diff, results are similar. Cheers. Ah... here's the fun one. subarujusty.proboards.com/thread/5826/throw-out-bearing

Fantastic news. Finally got to do the 2 man cv test and it passed. Now i just need to source a non-stripped hub. Anyone Frankenstein a 5x100 pattern hub in?

Yay!!!! No transmission removal for you! swap to 5 bolt? Yes, in this order Buy 2.5L Impreza driveline... Get torch Cut, weld, Install drive train! Other then that, I don't know anyone that has looked into it. If you want 5x100 spacing for wheel options, it would probably be easier to re-drill the hubs! Matt
