Hey there, first off let me say I LOVE my Justy.. I drive it over my 08 Grand Cherokee.
So the problem is I drive the car quite hard. Recently I was driving in the sand dunes. I stopped the vehicle while in 4wd then tried to drive forward. Heard a bang and after just grinding and no movement. Tried pushing (its not heavy and had 2 guys) no go. Front axles seized. Got a truck to tow it forward and axles broke free but now only rear wheel drive. I am assuming this means my transfer case is broken.
Can anyone give some suggestions? and where I could get a new one. I am in Northern Canada.

Can anyone give some suggestions? Check to make sure you didn't just strip a hub.

This man knows of what he speaks. I have driven two different Justys with stripped out front right hubs, so I should know as well.
Good luck.

Just checked the hub, looks okay. Pulling the axle now to see if it may have stripped on the other side.

Any other suggestions if say the axle is not stripped out?
If i turn the drivers front wheel I can see the passenger attempt to turn then just clicks. The axle isnt moving either.

eeek, that sounds like either a stripped inner spline at the gearbox end, or something stripped in the transfer case. It might be serious after all.

Just checked the hub, looks okay. Pulling the axle now to see if it may have stripped on the other side. Yeah looks like you have the idea. You're going to have to pull the axles to check splines and hope the problem lies there. If you have a Gen II Justy then the problem also could be between the transaxle stub and axle extension on the passenger side of the transaxle. Once you get the axles disconnected try rotating one of the axle stubs on the transaxle and see if you get the same binding and clicking. If not, and if all the splines seem ok, then you might have blown a bearing assembly in either the double offset joint or constant velocity joint in one of the axles. If the problem is in the transaxle, and it works fine with emergency rear wheel drive, then maybe you just broke a splined stub. I think that can actually be replaced fairly easily.

I just hope its nothing too big! nothing on a justy is "big" which is the issue, they are so damn fiddly to work on hehehehe

ahah very clever.. Didn't mean "big". Anyways got the axle out and found that the stub and splines coming from the tranny were completely stripped. I cut the stub a little shorter and am welding it back on. Wish me luck PS anyone know if I can fill the tranny with fluid using the vent hose? My plug is stuck in there.

Don't weld the stub!!!! its heat treated and welding it will destroy any strength it has, meaning it will strip instantly when you apply power.
replacement is the only option.

Its already stripped... replacement is not really an option and cost more time and money than what I paid for the car. Even if it doesn't work ill have to change the same componenets anyways.

Don't mean to undermine your justy expertice! but I don't really have many options here. No replacement parts with no money to put into the car. Shipping alone to my location is very pricey.
I understand that the components are heat treated and welding will cause them to be more brittle, however both the stub and axle extension are stripped. I don't have the time, knowledge, or money to break open the tranny, change the stub and replace the extension.
Worst case senerio the stub snaps off or the weld doesn't hold up and ill have to park it untill I can get a donor car/parts.

I think you will find the welding option probably won't work out that great. Since you can't pull the dipstick on the transaxle as well, it's probably best to try to find a used transaxle at a junkyard and swap the whole unit. If you get one at a u-pull-it make sure you leave the axle extension attached so they don't charge you for it separately. Where are you located?

I agree it most likely wont turn out so great, but if I can get it running while I look for a junker its worth the time since I have a MIG and the whole thing prepped and ready to be welded.
I am located in Grande Praire, AB. Northern Canada. Ive been searching for a wrecked one for a few months now. I got the car with a bad head gasket and altenator had to order both online which cost me an arm and a leg with shipping alone, cant immagin what a transaxle would run me.

it won't make it brittle, it will make it softer so its going to twist off like a rotten carrot and wreck the bearing (if you don't fry that when welding it) and possibly the rest of the trans as well.
if you are going to weld it, make sure you use low hydrogen arc rods, about 3/16" at 180 amps using 3 pass weld with a deep chamfer to give a good root weld. mig is not recommended as it will more than likely crack off when it cools.

the tranny stubs are not difficult to do, just takes time and patience, and the ability to strip the trans, which means motor and trans out, and abig clean bench to work on. Plenty of egg trays help to put things in to keep them in their correct order too.

Am pretty sure the stub axles in the FWD are the same, so finding one shouldn't be that hard.
Odd that the car wouldn't move till you towed it. I have found the splines in the axle extension wear badly, Sounds like you've blown the spider gears in the front diff and stripped the splines while towing it.
