My rear brake drum on my 94 gl started making a rubbing noise and there was a little play with the back tire. I took the wheel and drum off, the wheel barring in good and packed however the circle of the brake drum on the inner side around the spline has began to wear (not the spline its self but just around the spline on the inner side of the drum). I put some grease in there and tightened the drum back, this eliminated the play for about 500 miles then the tire started to wobble again and worse this time. I ordered a new brake drum and had it installed the problem went away for about 1000 miles before the noise is now back and the new drum is wearing in the same inner circle and i cant figure out why. I cant be replacing the drum every 1000 miles but have another one to put in. Has anyone experienced anything like this and may have a potential reason for this grinding away of the inner ring of the drum which is creating space and play and a possible solution. thanks.

I too am having a similar noise and inner drum lip seal thing rubbing. My noise only happens when I take a sharp left turn and the noise emanates from the rear right wheel. I have taken off the drum and inspected the situation. The inner lip of the drum was rubbing against the wheel bearing seal. They both had ware and fresh metal exposed. During checking things out I noticed there was play in the wheel coming from a very badly worn rear axle, yeah weird eh?! So I hunted down a good used axle and installed it and the noise went away for about a day or so and came back. I also got a new seal but it turned out to be too thick and unusable so I installed the old seal, Damn you Halsey Imports. I checked the wheel for play and there was non that I could see. The only thing that I could think of is that there is a very small amount of play in the bearing this causing the inner lip of the drum to rub against the wheel bearing seal and this cause this noise, OR I am completely wrong and have no idea as to were this noise is coming from at this wheel. The bearing felt tight and the axle solid. I was jiggling and yanking on that thing with no play at all. My guess it as good as yours. I would check your bearing and axle. My axle threads for the nut were trashed but held 80 ft*lbs of torque and were most of the problem, or at least I thought.
