Hi! I've got and old rusty Justy, and I'm thinking of machining myself a piece of metal like what the company Phantom makes. It's something that should make friction inside the differential to make both rear wheels spin instead of just one... I'm not interested in a fully locked rear differential, since this is my daily driver... Link to the manufacturers site: www.phantomgrip.com/I suppose it would work, what would you guys think? -GranPrismo-

it works, like a cheap psuedo lsd will work...accurate machining is required, and by that, i mean accurate....get it wrong and the diff will go bang. I'm actually wondering if the rear diff would hold up with the spiders friction locked, they are pretty tiny.

yah it puts pressure on the the internal gears (spider gears) to try and drive both wheels. ive seen em used alot in honda transmissions. they seem to work ok but i wouldnt commute with one.

I'm able to work at 0,01mm range, and i believe thats good enought... I'ts only ment for use on snow and dirt, so there wont be that much stress on the differential and spinders. And as i said, a welded differential is not a posibility. Is it any problem taking out the rear differential? Something to remember when taking it out?

umm, look again, thats setup like a torq-lok, its only when the friction between the 2 tyres on ashphalt overcomes the friction between the plates and the spiders that it becomes a diff. the 2 plates pressing on the spiders are held there by springs in the 4 corners, those 4 springs determine at what stage it "slips" and becomes a differential, so its locked all the time, until you turn a corner on ashphalt, when it "should" slip and allow the spiders to turn.

if its only for snow and dirt, why arent you using a Lincoln locker?

Dogoman: that is what i want. dont know where to get som heavy duty springs tho... Would the springs from a clutch be strong enough?
Streetruler: If the Lincoln locker is what I think, that wil say a welded diff, im not interested, because i want the car to be playfull in snow and dirt, but driveable at asphalt without the rear wheels going the same speed.

oh i thought you might be making a dedicated car. and yes lincoln locker = welded diff.
if you're able to do all this machining why not just get a LSD from another car, call an axle shop and tell em "this inner, that outer and this length" and then call a drive shaft show saying "this front yolk, that rear yolk and machine some mounts rather than try to do this precision machining on what ive always called the "iffy diffy"

hmm, the springs in my torq-lok are about 3/8 diameter, about 1 1/4" long and vary between 10 and 95 lb crush pressure depending on colour. its the spring tension that determines the "slip" point, in my case, from 40 ftlbs up to a whopping 192 ft-lbs of torque between the axles before the diff acts like a diff....like i said before, i doubt the justy diff will hold togther on the ashphalt with that extra tension on the axles, even at a miniscule 25 ft-lbs (which, by the way, is about the minimum torque you need to spin a tyre in the mud)

I would Get a new differential or order a lsd core for it but, i cant afford it at the moment... Wil it work fore one or two years? And where should i get springs?

And where should i get springs? honestly, I don't know whether it would hold together or not. As for the springs, I got mine from a company locally that rebuilds diffs and gearboxes, don't knowwhere they got them from, but the springs are different colours denoting crush pressure and they all came in nice wee plastic bags.

Okey, I'll try to get some from a clutch or something... What material should i use? I believe aluminum Willy be to soft, and stainless to hard... Regular "Black" steel would be fine?

When you click the 'reply' button, there will be some buttons at the bottom of the screen. One of them is called SPELL CHECK and it looks like this. . . It is a terrific built-in feature and when you use it, everyone thinks you are smarter.

spell checks a waste of time, it spells colour and tyres wrong.....heheh
what you want to use is mild steel , preferably a grade slightly towards the harder end of the scale to minimise wear.

just remember to keep the blocks approximately the same size when finished to ensure that it won't vibrate at highway speeds.
