hey guys, i picked up a free 88 rs from a fellow board member some time ago with various ignition problems... after a new cap, rotor, plugs, and wires, i thought i had it about licked until the day before i broke my arm (and only 4 days after picking it up) when the damn thing failed to start. tested it to have no spark. fast forward 5 weeks (got the cast off) and i'm feeling like trouble shooting. the first problem i found was that whenever the car was in reverse the top right fuse would blow (shared between reverse light switch, turn signals, and ignition). turns out the reverse switch on the transmission would short to ground when engaged. 2nd the car would miss at idle and (smoothed abit when reved) get worse as the car heated up. with some testing i got to the vr sensor inside the distributor. this vr should read around 1kohms. mine would read around 2.5 or 3 kohms at room temp and at operating temp could read to 20 kohms. swapped out vr's. 3rd there was an intermittant open in the connector between the distributor and vehicle wiring harness. I've cut the connector out temporarilly. i've driven about 350 miles since these repairs with NO spark problems at all... now i just gotta tune in the carb

vr stands for? And what does it look like and where do you measure it?
i am looking at rebuilding the carb out of my 88, picked up a rebuild kit off ebay a little while ago. If you (or anybody else out there) is thinking of a rebuild, i can give you a part # off the rebuild kit. I know after I got the kit I googled the part # and found at least one site that sells them.

the vr is the variable reluctor (or little sensor in the distributor for figuring the timing). To measure it you just ohm across the red and green wires at the plug end of the distrubutor. These go all the way to the spark computer under the dash. I'm not sure of the pin out right now (the wires are black and white at this point), but you can check the circuit there for testing out an open in the line.
i have an extra carb for now... and soon i'll trying out a couple different efi setups on it but thanks anyway.
though i'd be good just to have it in the forum for future reference.
