Had this thing for 4-5 months now, problems been there since day one. Seen 3 mechanics now, none of them have really isolated the problem.
When idling it's got quite a tickety sound, valves are good and fine, new plugs, new wires, oil filter, oil change etc.
When it's at 1000RPM you can't hear it and its sounds mostly normal.
The oil light also blinks quite a bit when idling but again at 1000RPM it turns off no matter how much oils in it, (little or full).
Thoughts? I'm willing to pay I wanna keep it a very long time.
One mechanic thought it might be "piston slap" but no idea if that's true...

If your oil light is blinking you probably have low oil pressure. Did the mechanics you took the car to check your oil pressure? If not, you can pick up a cheap mechanical oil pressure guage (like $5-15) for peace of mind. I haven't experienced it myself, but I've read on these forums of problems with our oil pumps that could lead to catastrophic engine damage.

Oil pump problem?
how do you test it?
What's catastrophic damage exactly? Unrepairable?

I think you jinxed me, my Justy has just started doing the same thing re the oil light coming on at idle. Tickety sound I wouldn't worry about, that's just how these things sound from my experience. But low oil pressure = bad. Can anybody who has had oil pump issues comment here? How did low oil pressure first manifest itself, and how long until catastrophy?

Scoob,
When I was talking to the subie dealership, I had said some things i read online mentioned oil pumps being a problem after 200,000K + but mine only had 90,000k... The guy laughed and said most of them are done at 100,000 on these...
If i could do it myself, and find the part for less than the quote Subaru Canada wanted for it, i'd totally love that... even get the part used... but then what u know?

You could give Subiegal an e mail & ask her for the price of the parts. jamie@chaplins.com
