So I have a Justy with the perfect combination of parts to Not have a thermostat.....no problem....I just made my own housing It's two factory housings....one with a channel cut out for the oem t-stat....bolted together with some 1" heater hose for a new upper hose [so its easier to reach] not bad for homebrew!

Not to sound negative, but I don't think that setup is going to work very well. The sensing bulb of the t-stat needs to have a constant flow of coolant going past it in order to properly control the flow of coolant through the radiator. Most engines have the heater core feed pipe ported off of the t-stat housing to accomplish this. I would imagine your engine would tend to get really hot before the t-stat ever heats up enough to open.
On a fuel injected Justy the t-stat is actually on the return side from the radiator. It keeps the coolant returning to the engine at 170 degrees F. Different then any other car I've owned!

it actuallt works quite well. I did havw to move it so its right next to the upper heater hose take off. I know 2nd gens have the thermostat in the lower hose but minw doesn't....b/c its got a mish-mash of parts...including the lower coolant pipe from a 1st gen. When I first installed it, it was 4-5 inches from its current location....and that was too far away...but where it is now, it works great.

I take it you're missing the correct metal pipe and t-stat housing that attaches to the water pump? It sounds like you already have it working decent as is but if you want I could mail you the correct pieces. I have several.

Justy4x4. That's cool of you to offer. I wouldn't mind having the right pieces, it just looks harder to get at....and we have had 13" of snow lately so I didn't want to be digging into the thing too much. Also, there are no justys in junk yards to scavenge parts from....hence the made at home part. This setup almost works. Today [first time its done this] it did get too warm before the initial opening of the t-stat then it behaved fine. I know several people who have run inline thermostats and used a small hole drilled into the t-stat to allow coolant flow [albeit a small amount] past it to get the t-stat to open as/when it should. I'm going to give that a try.

the bleed hole worked like a charm....though I made it a tad too big i think[5/32] so it runs just a bit cooler than my other justy used too...I may pick up another stock t-stat and use a bit smaller hole and see what happens....but it runs, has heat, and doesn't overheat....which is nice. Next up, some snow tires!
