Hello all, I recently bought a 09/87 5spd 4wd GL 3 door. The only thing that seemed wrong with it was that the timing belt was broken. (It was the original because of the low km's) According to the book at the subaru dealer, the timing belt that I put in is in the right place. Now it backfires at startup even though the choke is on, diesels when I shut it off, and runs at around 1500 - 2000 at idle when warm. Conversly it runs at around 900 when cold. The check engine light comes on once in a while, but turns off after a minute. It accelerates fine through the gears, but has some popping when I gear down. For the life of me I can't find a book on this car so any info would be very welcome.

Could the timing be out just a lil bit?

Does sound like you have timing off a little. Sure the belt was lined up & correctly installed??

you sure it didn't bend a valve as well? these are interference engines from what I gather...

The 1.2 is non-interference, been-there-done-that with a broken timing belt.
