This is my 2nd 91 ECVT 4x4 and they both had the exact same problem. It always starts but sometimes it's on the 1st try and others it could be on the 10th try. What happens is I hear a "tink" when I turn the key and nothing else, so I try and try and then it starts. What do I need to do to correct this problem? ???

I have the same problem on my 91 Justy! Instead of the starter turning over, I sometimes hear a small click coming from under the dash, sounds like somewhere near/above the hood release lever.
It only happens occasionally, and I think it happens more often in warmer weather. Wierd.
I must be a bad solenoid under the dash... anyone?

It's the ignition relay. You are correct by saying that it is just over the hood release lever. It's a brown "beige" relay. It's more or less the safety relay to stop the gas pump in the case of an accident. I had the same problem. I just cut the wires off and by-passed it. It solved the problem, but in the case of an accident, unless the power's cut the gas pump won't go off.
If I remember correctly there is 5 wires. 4 big ones and a smaller one. The small one comes from the key switch (only live when key is on), 2 of the big ones come from the battery (always live) and the 2 other's: one goes to the gas pump and the other to the injectors.
I connected the gas pump and injectors to the key switch wire and cancelled the 2 wires from the battery.

Hey thnx fo rhte information about the ignition relay. The Justy Mech. at the Subaru dealership told me it was the ignition switch. I will start by replace the iginition relay 1st. I gotta fix this because I need to but my remote start alarm on. But for now when it doesn't want to start I just leave the key in the start positon and conenct the neg and poz of the started and she starts right up. You can buy a remote starter switch on Ebay for about $5.00 shipped.
