My 1994 Justy, 5spd, 2wd, needs the oil pan gasket replaced. What all is involved in doing this & any time saving tips would be appreciated. THANKS!

Hey
Pretty simple if you have a decent place to work....
Jack the car... or put it on a hoist. You'll notice the big sub frame that runs under the engine from front to back... this can be unbolted and dropped... and you can get to the oil pan. Problem... this sub frame also is the main motor mount, so when you remove it.. the engine will drop a few inches... you will need some way to lift the engine later when you go to put it all back together...
Unbolt the exhaust, and remove the sections under the oil pan... and you're there. Lotsa little bolts (10 mm)... and the drive shaft gets in the way on a few... but with a knuckle... or bloody knuckles... you'll get it out!

Thanks! I can see pretty much all that you mentioned. I may try & support the motor from above before unbolting the support. I have a decent place to work on it, but I have some physical limitations on the work I can do. Hopefully, I can do it. Local independant shop wanted $150 plus parts.

You can either supoort it from above with a engine hoist... come-along from ceiling what have you...
or after you bolt the sub frame back on the motor... and bolt it up at the front (how I do it) then just jack the sub frame with a floor jack till it slips into place... harder then it sounds by yourself (lots of cursing) but with a partner it would be easy... and install the rear bolts... lining up those holes on the rear you willl need a drift pin of some sort...

Liablilty clause!
if you don't support it from above.. make sure you're off to the side when you unbolt it... it doesn't fall far (like 1-2 inches)... but don't have your face right there!

Esteban I see by your post that the Ol' White Justy needs an oil pan gasket. As Matt said, this is not too bad a job once you support the engine and get the cross member and exhaust pipe removed. I've found that supporting the engine is really a "Must" when removing the cross member from the vehicle. Aside from making your repair under the car much easier, there are other things to consider as well...As Matt mentioned, the engine if unsupported will actually only drop down about 2"-3" when the cross member is removed. Unfortunetly, this amount of drop will often times abnormally load and twist the bushings in the three other mounting points used to secure the engine and trans in the car. If the bushings are in marginal condition they can rip/tear and fail. (This happened to me with a trans mount on an 89 Justy with an ECVT box). Also the accelerator cable, some hoses and possibly some electrical wiring could also be at risk if you just let the engine hang while doing the repair. I purchased an OTC brand FWD engine supporting fixture since I do alot of work on fwd vehicles (My Honda buddies like to burn up clutches!) But, really you could make your own out of wood or if you have access to a welder you could make one from steel. If you want to tackle the pan gasket on your own E-mail me and I will send you a digital picture of my OTC fixture set up on the car so you can get an idea. PS..I didn't make it to FLA this past week....Long story!! Jim

Matt & Jim, I am still thinking about whether or not I should tackle that gasket job. I had major neck reconstructive surgery several years ago, & although it was mostly successful, there are some things I just cannot do. I could never do that job with the car on a lift, but may be able to working on a creeper. It leaks quite a bit, & of course, the oil drips on the exhaust stinking the car up.

Are you sure it's the oil pan that's leaking? I thought my '91 was leaking from the pan, but after power washing everything off and then running the engine for a bit it ended up being the oil pump cover O-ring was leaking bad. The oil would run down the lip of the pan and drip off the front of the engine onto the exhaust. I resurfaced the cover with 600 grit sand paper and put in a new O-ring all is well now! Now if only I could get my valve cover to quit weeping

I will have to look at it more closely. It does leak from that front corner under the oil pump. After looking at it, yesterday, I can see that someone has replaced the oil pan gasket at some time, also. May let a shop just check it for me.

Yeah I was kind of questioning the leak in the oil pan gasket as this all got going... Another prone leak point... which winds up at the bottom... is the cam seal. leaks down the inside of the timing belt cover... and out the bottom

I found that one oil pump cover bolt was loose & tightened it.That stopped much of the dripping but I have to look at cam seal,, also. It may not be the oil pan gasket after all.
