Another white 88 rs just showed up at the wrecking yard. Perfectly straight, it has a huge hole in the side of the block. I was wondering if the painted bumpers are different from gl unpainted bumpers and worth saving. I can also get a full set of mudflaps if they are worth anything.

I dunno if you have removed the bumpers on a Gen1 but it is a rewarding PIA!!! There are #3-size phillips head screws securing the bumpers both front and rear and they have a truck-load of torque on them. Of the 7 spare bumpers I have, I can tell you that the first three were removed by drilling out the screws (after trying in vain to remove them with screw drivers). The trouble with drilling the screws is - it is difficult
- you ruin bits
- you don't get to keep the screws for future use
Also, if you ever use these bumpers in the future, you'll have to know how to get 'em off proper because you can't mount a bumper on your own Justy if you have drilled out, messed up fasteners stuck in your car! You will never be able to get all of these out by hand. Here's what I have found works very well. You go to a tool store...no, not Home Depot, I mean a real tool store, you can buy this special driver bit socket. I have two of them and bought them at Tacoma Screw and another place called Tool Town. This is a socket that is a normal 3/8" drive on one end but on the other end is a 1/4" receiver with a snap ring built in, so it can hold driver bits! Here's a look at the sockets: I have two of them, one black, one grey and they are loaded with phillips drivers in this photo. You can then use them with an impact wrench like this: Or if you don't have an impact wrench and don't want to fork out the $300 for one, you can instead get the old fashioned hammer type (somebody wanna help me out with the proper name for this tool?) like this: If you haven't seen one of these, it is a tool where one side is a 3/8" drive and the other has a striker where you hit it with a hammer and it delivers a single impact twist to whatever bolt or in this case screw, you would like to free up! This method is the one I have used on the last 4 of my 7 spare bumpers I've pulled and I will tell you, I will never do it another way ever again. Remember, only use #3-size phillips bits and press very hard before you pull the trigger I hope this helps you, -SJ- P.S. in order to remove the front bumper on a Gen1 without wrecking stuff, you must remove a lot of the body work. Plan accordingly

It's called an Impact Driver. I've used these a few times and they are great.

im confused... why not just take the bracket off with the bumper? if i remember correctly, there are 2 16 mm bolts into each front chassis leg, and 2 screws into the lip of the front wheel arch (probably rusted to bits by years of water and mud, i drilled them out and put new stainless self tappers in) much easier and less hassle

Are you sure you've removed Justy bumpers? Nothing simple about it.

seattlejusty; My gen1 bumper on my parts car was real easy to remove. All I had to do was hit a speedbump on my way home! -Terry

You will never be able to get all of these out by hand. I just removed my rear bumper today('94 DL)...just wanted to see if I could do it and how much of a PITA it would be! Many thanks to SJ for the above tutorial. Mine came off pretty easy ...only broke the heads off four out of God knows (20, maybe of those dang #3 Philips head screws). BTW those screws only hold the plastic cover to the actual bumper beneath it. There are two major bolts and two major nuts, one per side actually holding the rear bumper to the unibody. These came off very easily (rust and all) by simply soaking them in penetrating oil and working them back and forth. I think I can salvage the bumper, but the unibody on left side looks like Swiss cheese...I'm going to try and patch it together and see if I pass inspection I wish I could leave off the bumper cover...the ol' girl looks pretty cool w/o it, but methinks the authorities would not be too thrilled.
