Are the dimmer switches in these cars staright forward dimmers. I know in my older subaru it goes through an "Illumination controller" that likes to let out the magic smoke when you tap into it for any reason.

Well since the Justy uses a dimmer control module, I am leary of tapping off it (has anyone does this on a 89?). When i tapped into my "Illumination Control Module" on my 97 outback it went poof, and it was a very very expensive poof at that (thank God for scrap yards).

Honestly, every Volvo from the 70's to the mid 80's used a very robust rheostat dimmer. Simple, small enough to fit in one of the dash "blanks" (like right beside the stock dimmer control). Just FYI, the "illumination control module" only varies the illumination ground. The switched power (+) from the headlight control (or the "P" parking switch) is always full voltage, this is a good circuit to tap into for adding a second dimmer. I am suggesting tapping into the Redw/Black-stripe wire (behind the OEM illumination dimmer control) for "second dimmer" switched power. Aside from adding the new load to the parking lights' circuit, there should be no impact to the existing illumination control. -RRJ

I would like a second dimmer to go right next to the factory one, another Justy's. ON my Outback I have the three JDM gauges plugged into the facotry harness, which leaves then on all the time. Very distracting when I dim the dash. I will have to watch for a dimmer that matches, as I am anal that way Thanks.
