I bought a 1988 Subaru Justy DL at a auction for $120 it wont start. It's getting fuel im not sure about spark. It spins free when trying to start it someone told me it could be the timing belt. Any ideas?

An easy check for the timing belt is to remove the distributor cap. Have someone crank the engine for you. While they give the engines a few cranks check to see if the rotor is turning. If the rotor turns, the timing belt is intact. If it doesn't turn while the engine is being cranked you have a busted belt. Do not crank the engine for an extended period of time

pull one plug... re-attach the spark plug wire to the loose plug... place end of plug near a metal grounding surface... crank engine... you will see sparks jumping from plug to metal surface
