hi everyone. being as i just did this i figured id share. its a write-up of a head unit and rear speaker install.
NOTE: i have some pics but i cant host them. if someone wouldnt mind doing that for me that would be awesome.
head unit
Parts needed:
head unit of your choice -- i used the JVC HD radio built in KHDR-20 or something like that. its the 99 dollar HD receiver built in CD player
metra wiring harness adapter for your respective year justy (20 at cartoys)
dash adapter kit. the guy that owned the car before me made one out of sheet metal and it was kind of genius how simple it was and how well it works.
quick disconnects: for a pack of 3 pairs (3 male 3 female) its 2 bucks at radio shack. i needed 4 pairs for the speakers, 2 pairs for signal and power and one pair for ground and i think i needed one more but i cant remember.
NOTE: you have a choice, you can either start at step 8 where you build the new head unit harness and the adapter so its plug and play when you remove the old radio and then come back to step 1 once finished or start at step 1 and just follow it. Personally i build the harness where its warm and i can watch TV while i do it.
NOTE: I started at step 5 cause I realized that step 1 - 4 were specific to my case and not generic to justys. Then I got too lazy to re number everything as I referenced points by step number and didn’t wanna change all that. Sorry.
step 5: remove the outer trim ring around the (stock) radio. there are 2 pawl on either side. if you dont know what a pawel is take your hand, bend your fingers perpendicular to your palm. Pretend its made of plastic. that’s a pawl. its just a plastic hook or "half an arrow" if you were to split it in half the long way.
dont be afraid to break this as you wont really need it anymore. for nostalgias sake you can keep it but i dunno why you would.
step 6: once you complete step 5 there are some deeply inset screws, 4-6 of them as i recall that hold in the stock radio. remove those and pull the radio out.
step7: unplug all wires from the radio. the round plug that looks like a stereo headphone jack is the antenna.
step 8: if you are starting the DIY here once you finish with the wiring harness, go back to step one and then when you get back to step 8 skip ahead to the next thing you haven’t done yet.
go inside and open your wiring harness adapter. now, each company is different so each color is not quite standard but they do keep some similarities. for instance, all negative speaker wires will have a solid color and a dashed black line. all grounds should be black.
take your new head unit's harness and mate it to the adapter. you will need to read what color on the adapter corresponds to what on the new HU harness. i always start with speakers and ground. this just eliminates some of the things that are easy and only leaves me with about 3-5 things to wire up after depending on if i have an amp, power antenna ect.
this is where you should use the butt connectors you got at radio shack. i would personally recommend using the shielded or covered male/female packs of connectors. they are the ones that look like a flat plate and the corresponding receptacle. i recommend the shielded/covered ones cause its less electrical taping you have to do later.
Once complete grab your new plug and play harness and the dash kit and the HU, if you brought it inside with you. Go back to the car.
Step 9: install your dash kit. Unfortunately I did not have to do this since I already had a plug and play one. What the guy did was cut out a sheet metal ring that was the same shape as the opening for the radio. He then cut a hole in it for the new HU and then added 2 tabs at the bottom with holes, that bolt to those 2 vertical screws above the ash tray you removed. Really clever. But like I said, this is where you gotta figure this out. Im assuming that since you are doing all this so far you probably have the intelligence to figure the dash kit out on your own.
Step 10: once the kit is installed take the “ring” or “Cage” off of the new HU. Insert that into the dash kit. See all those funky shaped cutouts in the cage? Those are for you to bend back to anchor the cage into the dashkit. Use as many of those as you can as they keep everything from wobbling around.
Step 11: once the cage is in, pull the old factory wiring harness through the hole. Attach your new PNP harness to it and tuck some of the wires back. Grab your new HU and your keys. Plug in the HU. Turn the car on and make sure you put the face plate on. Play the new radio to make sure it all works ok. You might wanna plug in the antenna cable too incase you didn’t take a CD with you.
If all goes well go on. If not you are gonna have to trouble shoot it yourself. There are too many mitigating things for me to provide any insight into this.
Step 12: shove the wiring harness back into the dash. Once that’s in there, push the radio into the dash until you either hear or feel some sory of “CLICK”. Every deck has some kind of locking mechanism to keep it in the cage.
Step 13: put the trim ring back onto the new HU.
Step 14: send me 1 million dollars.
Step 15: repeat step 14. just kidding…but you can if you wanna.
Now you are done enjoy.
