Some rust, but no rust-through on my 89. This is a Southern car so it gets very little exposure to corrosive de-icing chemicals/salts. I haven't had a chance to look thoroughly but rust appears on the following places. Under the rear window wiper mount. A tell tale streak of brown from water running under the wiper grommet and washing rust thats forming around the edge of the hole the wiper motor drive stud sticks through. Around both door light switches of all places, the passenger side door window frame in the corner and at the rubber knub on the front window channel. In the engine compartment on the subframe directly under the brake line junction box on the passenger side. Brake fluid had leaked on the frame below. This is actually the worst place visible and will be the hardest to fix because its not very accessable.
The rust that worries me most is the places I can't see, espcially under the car since its slathered in undercoating that water can get under where its cracked (and believe me there are cracks everywhere!) One thing I've noticed about Subarus is they rust just for the fun of it. Living in the South where few corrosive agents are used, a car shouldn't rust that much. Despite the excellent conditions here, Subarus are among the top rust buckets on the roads. A shame since these cars are unigue and ingeniously engineered. All the more reason to fight back with frequent detailings, (not washings, there is a big difference!) regular wax and buff, and touch up on knicks and dings. Ultimately I would guess my car needs to be sandblasted underneath, repainted and undercoated.
