With JustyRacer's encouragement, I am preparing to replace the head gasket - or at least take the head off to inspect its condition. It is a '93 5 spd FWD. Symptoms: 1. Car starts and runs but has no power. I can move the car around the parking lot barely with lots of throttle. 2. Compression was measured 50-80# in cylinders 1 & 2, 120# in cyl 3 by Cdn Tire mechanic. Sounds like head gasket failure between 1 & 2 Cyl to me. 3. No antifreeze in engine oil.
Since I cannot locate a Haynes manual for the Justy, does anyone have a step-by-step procedure for re-and-re the head, or will it be obvious when I get at it? Do you just take everything off until the head comes off? I read the post about the 8 head bolts. On the re-install, what are head bolt torque and tightening pattern? I haven't done this since high school, a long time ago. Philip

it is very obvious how to remoove it wen you get to it...remoove the manifolds...remoove the valves cover ect...
to put it back on there is a specific order to torque the bolts...and you do it in 2 shot at 2 diferent torque...
i will get back to you whit those info...

You should also remove the bolts in reverse order.
You will defenitely need new bolts - DO NOT use the old bolts again. Also I think the gasket has to be changed anyways if you remove the head after such a long time.

maybe i should off ? but i dont know wy ? they are very big solid bolts ?

you don't need to get new bolts.
I didn't, and there's no problems so far.
The only reason to replace them is if they have stretched too much.
and as was said before. Just undo the intake manifold bolts and pull it away a couple inches. Do the same for the exhaust manifold. then take off the timing belt, and take off the head. You can take it distributor and all.

OK, the question is if the gasket is hold by stress bolts - I'm not sure about it , but I suspect it. Otherwise you'd have to tighten them every XXXXX miles. If it's that way, the bolt will lengthen when tightended. This ensures that the pressure on the gasket is always the same. E.g. unter heavy loads or temperature fluctuations.
The problem is, that this is a plastic deformation of the material. So it's usually a good idea to use new bolts.

I also need to know the torque specs for the head bolts.. Will someone with a chilton and/or similar manual please list the head bolt torque for us? I have a 1988 1.2

Tighten in sequence to 29ft. lbs. (39 Nm), 43ft. lbs. (59 Nm), 51ft. lbs. (69 Nm)

Im not sure in your particular model, but in my 1988 1.2 litre I did not have to pull the manifiolds, I pulled the valve cover, and the timing belt, obviosly the air cleaner, and all the wires hoses etc. then I just lifted the head off with intake, and exhaust still attached..two bolts from the ex. manifold to the cat were easier and quicker than pulling the manifold and replacing the gasket.. I did have to do a bit of a shuffle to get it out of the compartment, but it saved me on replacing another gasket.. To install the new one after the head was cleaned and prepped, I just layed the gasket on the block, and had a friend help me jiggle the head into place, being carefull not to damage the new head gasket at all.. worked for me
