is that easy to do? ive been driving with the 4wd all day after this happened...i disengaged the 4wd and tried the 2wd, now the car is not even moving, as if im on neutral.....should i just replace both just to be safe?? i think it may be the drivers front cuz when i installed the front passenger first..then i had to drive somewhere so.. i drove the car and it was fine but when i got back, i jacked the car up and went on replacing the drivers front cv axle.....when i finished, drove around and it was fine but when i had to reverse for the first time i heard a wierd sound and thats when the nightmare started....

**diablojusty** hate to hear of your troubles friend. I believe that it would be fair to ask, did you rebuild the CV ends? Or did you buy a complete set of half shafts?
There is a good chance that one of your CV joints has not been assembled correctly (either by you or the vendor who assembled the complete half-shaft). Like a CV cage cir-clip or CV center-spline snap-ring not seated, this would create the behavior you describe, the forward/reverse description you gave may just be anecdotal, as it could have just been a matter of time or a sharp turn that would have dislodged a partially seated snap-ring (allowing the splined axle to pull out of the CV joint). Forgive me if you have already done these steps: For the replacement subaru suggests reassembly with "new" spindle hardware (conical washer, center spacer, castle nut). You then torqued the hub castle nuts to 145ftlbs (196Nm). If you did not do these steps then Yes the hub(s) are likely your issue.
How would a fella diagnose where the damage is? I would jack only one front wheel off the ground (put a jack stand in under the suspension) and leave the other side on the ground. Put the car in 1st gear (with the engine off), and slowly hand turn the lifted wheel. -Does the hub castle nut turn with the wheel? NO. then bad hub. YES. then look further behind the wheel to the axle. -Does the axle turn with the wheel? NO. then faulty axle CV joint assembly. YES. then move onto inspecting the other front hub / axle.
-Do both front hubs and axles seem to be good? YES. look to the axles, (with wheels straight) are the CV boots relaxed or pulled out taught? If you push and pull on the axle shaft does the "yolk" appear to function? When checking the yolks did either shaft come dislodged within the CV boot (it would hang down or sag in the stretched boot)?
It may suck, but if you find a new half-shaft to be faulty you should have a receipt and can take it back in exchange for another.
I am just speculating please do some inspection and let us know what you find. Oh and please stop driving the car, you are making it worse.
