Hey all,
Got a 92 justy 4WD and the engine has a loud knock or rattle at around 2500 rpms or above. Sounds like somethings ready to let go. I just recently brought this car and i'm not familier with this engine yet. The knock seems to be coming from the left side, bottom end.
Just wondering if u guys familier with the justy engine know of any common problems that could cause this loud knock at or above 2500rpms. Its going to be a few weeks befor i'll get a chance to start stripping it apart to find the problem.
Thanks

hard to say...
if its coming from the passenger side i would check the Oil/water pump chain....the tensioner or the chain can be wornout...

Yeah, it sounds like a loose chain rattling, the rattle goes away instantly when u let off on the gas.
So has anyone replaced their oil pump chain? I had a quick look at the service manual at work, it says to loosen crankshaft mains and pry down on it to remove the chain. Anybody have any tips befor i tackle this job. I'll be ordering the chain and guides this week.
Thanks

I am also dealing with noise issues, skyedragon. A mechanic's stethescope has been very valuable to me to determine exactly where the noises are coming from. I'd investigate further and positively nail down where the noise is before tearing into the engine.

thanks guys,
ya, i will check it out with a stethescope to pinpoint the noise befor i start stripping it down, I hope it's just the chain. She runs perfect, nice and quiet when idling.
Will keep u posted.

My engine was making a simmilar noise before it threw the middle rod. It was silent when ideling and was loudest when the engiene was under power. I would like to know what solution you found to your engine.

From reading everything in this and similar threads I have come to the conclusion that the connecting rod bearings are going in my 1991 Justy GL 4WD--the clicking/slapping noise @ around 2500-3000 rpm (gets worse as the engine gets warmer) and last week my oil light flickered a bit at idle but went away as soon as I gave the engine gas. Too bad, as I have really been enjoying my "Golfcart with Attitude".
Is there anything I can do in the shortterm to extend the life of this engine a bit longer, before the rods go, such as using a engine sealant/treatment, thicker oil, fixing the oil pump and/or chain if they are excessively worn?
Thanks in advance for your assistance! Greg

Do yourself a favor NOW
if they are just going, you can probably just buy new bearings and pop them in.
But if you let it go. you might spin a bearing, then you need ot get the crank machined, and all that kinda stuff.

DoItSidewayz is right on the money!! REPLACE THE BEARINGS NOW!!! Justys have been always been known for "Bearing Delamination Issues". What happens is, the steel shell of the bearing flexes slightly under load when ever the engine operates. Over a period of time the flexing causes cracks develop in the bearing material and eventually pieces of the bearing delaminate..or fall off the bearing shell causing.. Excessive clearence, low oil pressure, and knocking. It is easy to replace the bearings in a Justy. I did mine 3 years ago at 133K (I now have 173K on the car..runs great!). All you need is a service manual, some basic hand tools, (including a FT-LB torque wrench), and some basic shop equipment (Jack, jack stands, etc) Don't let it go!.....If you spin a rod bearing it's all over!! You will need to replace the crankshaft and that "IS" alot of work!! Good luck! Do yourself a favor NOW if they are just going, you can probably just buy new bearings and pop them in. Also what goes hand in hand with the bearing breakdown is the oil pump. It's not too hard to pull the crank pulley to get to the oil pump cover and then pull the oil pump gear and shaft. If the shaft is deeply scared then so is your crankcase cover---thus your oil pressure is low. The crankcase cover is $400 , but the pump gear/shaft is cheap. I'm betting a new pump gear/shaft will help oil pressure alot. Jury might be out on this.

My dealer said that they always only changed the gear and the shaft and the oil pressure was back up then.
