If you have a multimeter check the voltage when it's running, should be around 14V. The light is suppose to come on when the alternator isn't charging. If that's the case the best option is to have it rebuilt at a local starter/alternator rebuild shop. The units available at the auto parts store are typically of low quality. Yes, they often times have a "lifetime" warranty, but how many times do you want to change it out?

***streetruler*** along with the harness that ***maynard*** brought up (this was the source of my charging woes) the engine ground is easily overlooked as well (attached on passenger side, beside radiator). just my .02$ -good times
--update-- I offered the ground, as it changed my charging output by 2x just by tightening it. I also had a secondary indication of a dimly lit alt light when rpms were up around 3k. The ground was found after repairing the harness in the exact place **maynard** made mention of.

the engine ground shouldnt be critical enough to do that. besides i havent had that hooked up for about a year now. i really think its just that the alt is dieing but we'll see. got an alt for 45 bucks coming.

UPDATE:
it was a dead alternator, but the one taht was sent to me was not quite the right one, the plugs were inverted, the opening on the bottom that attaches to the car was too wide and the belt alignment is off by about 3-6mm.
installed it, started it and the batt light was gone. so i know its the alt, not i just gotta get the right one.

REDROO: i was thinking of that ground strap thats on the far side of the engine bay, just some unimportant ground but the main battery ground is important i hit the batt with a multimeter and it read 11.9-something, started the car and tested it and it read 12.5something. installed the new alt and started it and the battt read 14.2ish. demon found
