Stupid question, but can one check the bulbs without opening the cluster? It's just a few screws on the GenI; I don't know about your modern car. Did the bulb failure come with the addition of the red pinstriping? I'd hate to see it removed, it looks great!

Sorry don't know WTF I was thinking but thats what I'd check next. If it was a short personally I would think it was to much of a PITA to be worth it.

You might want to check to see if the 4wd indicator switch on the transmission is plugged in and in good working order. The electrical connections down their can get pretty corroded over the years.

I dont have a manual. Do you know its location? Meanwhile, I'll look to see what I can find! Thanks 4x4. -T The switch is located about 3" back from the transmission dipstick. If you look straight below the brake booster you should see the electrical wiring and plug in for it. Try unplugging it and jumping the two wires together to see if the 4wd lights come on. If they don't the bulb might be burned out. If they do work then the switch is most likely bad. Hope this helps!

I see it! will do what I can asap. I thought it may be more than one bulb, which is why I assumed all 4 green rectangles would go out at different times and not all at once. Still, I will try this and see what I can manage. FINGERS ARE CROSSED! thanks again 4x4! -T

Danimal, I second you by adding another possible stupid question. Aren't the essential warning lights supposed to light momentarily when you first turn the ignition on? This is a form of bulb check.
Of course the 4WD light may not be essential.

The problem was the four green lights for the four wheels, right? I don't think that those light up when the ignition is first turned on or do they if 4WD is switched on. Do they wait until the vacuum is created and 4WD is truly engaged? If Im wrong I am no genius anyways. Don't sell yourself short; with your zip-tie fix you're a regular Justy Master. -Danimal

The lights stay off on start up, unless its engaged before start up. I dont think the light has anything to do with the vacuum, instead it is for the sensor itself. By the way... Im no Justy Master. I just know what the subaru likes -Trevor

Congratulations on your prompt fix, Enjoy your 4WD! The back end of my transmission is closed off and I'm without 4X4 capability: , all due to a broken prop shaft. I've never yet had my 4X4 function working and removed the switch before ever pressing it. Keep up the great work. -Danimal
