Hello everybody. I just purchased my first justy today for $500. ;D It is a 88 GL (i think) 4wd. I have always liked the concept of the car and i finally found one to buy. Already i am starting to notice how old the poor girl is. The light wiring is all messed up and such. Seems to drive good but it does have a high idle of about 1500-2000. Any suggestions on what i should look at would be appreciated. I am excited for this little car and look forward to hearing what you all have to say. Thanks

Here are some pictures of it. Let me know what you all think. Previous owner did the cheap paint job not sure if it will stay that color.

I think that's a pretty tragic paintjob but not as tragic as those hood pins.

I accept any opinions especially since both of the things seattle commented on were done by the previous owner. I will say that the latch for the hood is broken so the pins are holding the hood down haha

Welcome to the forums. It looks like she needs a little TLC but at least it appears rust free. Wiring problems are common on Justys.

Twenty‽‽‽
My money is on Maynard as the Justy Master.
Welcome to The Board, McStuf! It may be more common to have had the electrics tampered with in cars owned by people who paint them as this one is. Maybe the previous owner tried to install fog lights. Finish the install or find the real problem; what exactly do you mean that "the light wiring is all messed up and such"? Some people will laugh at or look down on the Justy no matter what the colour. Regardless of the previous owners intentions, there is no reason that you have to take the paint job seriously. If you can clean it thoroughly without removing any paint, put a couple clear coats over it. When you're into second gear half-way through an intersection and continue to race all the way through third up-hill in the snow the drivers that you're overtaking will know why your hood is pinned down! I'm guessing that the car is actually without any actual performance modifications. Is the check engine light on, indicating what may be causing the high idle? If you search this site for trouble codes some of the information can be quite helpful. -Danimal

Thanks Danimal. Well to start with the wiring they bypassed the headlight switch so the head lights are always on when the car is on and the running lights in the back and front are wired to a aftermarket switch but that whole circuit keeps blowing the fuse so right now i have a flash light lighting the instrument cluster and a book light shining on the license plate in the back. As for the high idle, the check engine light comes on once the car is warmed up but i have not been able to figured out which code it has. But all in all it runs real good and gets me everywhere i have needed to go so far, I even found a place that will sell me tires for my 12" rims. Thanks for all your advice everyone and hopefully soon i can be a help to the forum.

Wiring problems are common on Justys??? This is news to me and I have owned and driven upwards of 20 of them... Yeah exactly. This is the real no shit in this thread. So much misinformation is passed around even on these boards, like the one recently about how the Justy clutch is weak; I could probably scour these boards and make a list of all the bullshit people say. Like all Subarus of this era the Justy has an excellent electrical system and the wiring is fine until some asstard farcles with it. I believe the most common electrical farcle up made on a Justy is when the thermo-sensor (thermometer) that tells the electric fan to switch on & off fails and people spend $15 and 90 minutes installing a ghetto switch to manually control the fan instead of doing a little free homework, spending $12 and 20 minutes to replace the thermometer and keep the car stock and reliable. Do you know how many Justys I have seen dead in junkyards with ghettofied fan switches? I'm going to bed.

Sorry I disagree about the wiring. My justy was un-tampered with in that department and when I went to install a new radio there wasn't a single wire that I didn't need to rerun.

No the radio didn't work until I rewired it.

I've done three Justy stereo swaps so far, and didn't run into one bad wire. Only problem I've found is that the "bay" if thats what you want to call it isn't deep enough. When you say you reran every wire what do you mean? Obviously you don't mean every single wire under your dash was bad? I would assume that if every stereo wire was completely thrashed that something out of the ordinary had to happen.

I had to replace the constant and key on power wires along with both of the front speaker wires so the only ones that still worked were the unused rear speaker wires. The thing is one of the POs swapped a FI engine into it and I have a bunch of extra connectors. So I'm thinking they might be leaching water into the system. My car looks like it's been thru hell and back so who knows.

I think this is not a textbook Justy case.

Indkid, p'rhaps the wiring ought to ave bean changed and having not bean tampered with is the problem. Doesn't explain the stereo issue though. the wiring .. bypassed the headlight switch so the head lights are always on when the car is on .. the running lights in the back and front are wired to a aftermarket switch but that whole circuit keeps blowing the fuse.. Seems like someone wanted the headlights on without the rear running lights. Perhaps your car was once a moonshine runner. If your wire it back to stock the set-up works fine. With the headlights button depressed the lights still go out with the ignition off. If you remove the panel under the steering wheel and then look up underneath the dash up behind the hood release you should be able to see a little red light blinking on the computer if the ignition is on and the check engine light has come on. It should be blinking out the trouble code. One long flash signifies ten and quick flashes are for singles. One long flash and three quick flashes equals thirteen. Depending how involved the problem is you might be best advised to replace and bad parts and tune up afterward or tune the car up as it is; I'm sure plenty of folks on this site are driving their Justys with check engine lights on if they don't mind minor performance flaws. You're right that these cars are reliable. They are great little cars all year long if you don't let your ego get in the way of the summer months; anyone with patience enough to accelerate slowly will appreciate the Justy's great fuel economy. -Danimal

I checked the code. It was 5 quick flashes so the code must be 5. If any one can help me with translating this it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Was the check engine light on when you read the code? If not, that may have been to signify that it's a North American 4WD model. Drive until the light in the dash comes on and then read the code with the engine still running. I don't think that there are any single digit codes. www.troublecodes.net/Subaru/-Danimal
