Interesting Stacks...thanks for the pics and explanation of steering gear internals ;D. How did you know you had a problem? Excessive play in steering wheel, or did you just push against the tie-rods. I assume that plastic bush resides between the rack and housing, and only on one side, eh? Is that locknut/springy deal opposite the pinion adjustable? and what does it adjust? The boots and tie-rods/ends are probably easy to source, but that plastic bushing might be hard to find, maybe you can cobble up a suitable replacement .

I discovered the problem by excessive play in right wheel, tie rods weren't moving that much. Pull the boot back and the culprit is obvious, lots of play there. Why me?? Well I had a habit of riding around with a torn boot for years, dirt @ water get in there, the shaft rusts & pits start grinding that little plastic bearing away into dust. stacks Aha! Shame on you...torn boots are asking for trouble. Glad to hear you were able to repair your inner tie-rod with a little ingenuity and a hammer always helps! Thanks for the thorough explanation of my questions/will come in handy if I ever take apart the steering gear.

It occurs to me that each steering boot is a bellows. Should I vent each side?? Oh, each side should complement the other; the 'linear bearing' must be able to flow air as well as support the rack. Like the stock bearing below, see the triangular profile with 3 squared sides to let air flow. stacks I thought that plastic bushing had an odd shape to it...not quite circular and not completely tri-angular...Good sleuthing Sherlock!! I must admit I never thought of the boots acting like bellows to suck dirt in, to add insult to injury. Now I'll really be examining those gaiters for rips and tears .

When you took the steering rack out, was there any boot/ cover on the bulkhead from where the steering rod comes out? On my car, hot engine air is coming in from near the clutch pedal.

That works for me Stacks, but my boots don't bulge as much as I think they should . I think mine are so dried out that the air escapes past the clamps at both ends of the boot. I think a boot change is in order...I'll put that on my list of Justy repairs this summer. Very informative thread...thanx.
