The rear hatch on my '93 Justy is jammed shut, pulling at the release cable or trying to open it with the key doesn't work. Any ideas how I can get it open?

Couple of options. First, crawl into the back and look under the rear edge of the hatch. You should be able to see the lock lever on the hatch (the little lever you click over to lock the hatch before closing it). Stick a screwdriver or something under the edge of the hatch and try clicking the lever over to unlock. If you can't move it, then something is seized up in the locking mechanism. You can try spraying some lube into the keyhole and see if that frees it up. If not, then you will need to remove the trim cover on the inside of the hatch. This is the rectangular plastic panel that is secured with several plastic connectors around its edge. These connectors are removed by first placing a thin screwdriver just under the edge of the connector and prying up slightly. Then you need to get the screwdriver between the button that you can see and the central portion of the connector and pry up. A little hard to describe, but once you get one out you will get the idea. Once you get the panel off, you will have access to the lock linkage, and you should be able to spot the problem.

Thanks, I just had a quick look in there as I don't need to use it right now but I'll dig deeper!

I think my '88 has the same problem. It takes two people to open the hatch: one person turning the key and jiggling the hatch handle, and one person lifting the little lever in front of the driver's seat. Pain in the arse. I plan to do the repair that is described earlier in this thread. Peter2, in Victoria

I have actually broken into my Justy utilizing that little unlock lever I described under the back hatch. There is a small rubber plug in the rear right corner of the back compartment that you can access from just behind the right rear tire. I popped this plug out, inserted a wire coat hanger, and with a little bit of manipulation and trial and error, was able to hook this little lever to unlock the rear hatch.

Just from experience make sure your handle on the hatch is closed all the way, mine does this once in a while and thats all I have to do.
