i'm just trying to find a bit of information on guidelines for using the 4wd and if its safe to use all the time or for cornering on dry pavement. i tried to use the search but couldn't find anything.
thanks, Josh

Don't use it on dry pavement there is no center diff so the axles can't turn at different speeds. You will break things.

so is there anywhere i can find guidelines and can you mod the car to run on pavement?

so you can tell by my screen name, i am new to this but i think i understand a little about why the 4x4 on pavement is bad; is that cuz gravel and stuff ''gives a little? and cement is too much pressure on stuff?

That is correct. When the Justy is in 4WD mode, all 4 wheels are locked up solid (this makes for awesome traction on loose surfaces) but since all 4 wheels turn at different speeds, this means that something has to give. On gravel/dirt/ice/snow the tires will slip on the ground... this is OK. On paved road the tire has so much grip that it will twist the axles until something goes pop. The thing that will go pop first is usually going to be the splined hub. This is bad because they are getting very hard to find, very expensive and sometimes ruins the axles at the same time.
I mean this with as much love as I can muster. If you want AWD, get an Impreza.
If you want a 4X4 and can stomach using it in 2WD mode most of the time *gasp* then you can have a Justy, you just can't use the 4WD very often....unless you live in Canada and have delusions of the rest of the world being like it is where you live.

Well...thinking about it...if the problem is not having a central differential it would not be that hard to mod one to fit in the lil justy. What if you cut a driveshaft in half and put a central differential from an impreza or swift in there? doesent sound as impossible as fitting a boxer.

See, where I live it's 5 to 30 minutes to 4x4 territory. So maybe I am delusional too. And I probably wouldn't do it to a daily driver, but to a project Justy, I would either try what jintei says, or even just rip off stuff from a wrecked Impy out of the local B&R and jam it in. Like I said...project...

I'll be over to the junkyard next weekend to collect parts from your Justy.

Why do you want to run 4WD on dry pavement so bad anyway? grip and handling. everyone has an impreza but you never see any justy where i live and the car was free.

Besides, probably the only thing you can mess in the proyect is only a driveshaft., not a whole justy. Im sure that when somebody purposed to turbo a carbed old justy for the first time, people reacted negatively too. its easier to blame an idea than to risk a try, then if it didn't worked you can say why....

You can't drive any four wheel drive cars (or trucks) on dry pavement in 4wd -- they bind up because the front and rear axles can't turn different speeds (and the front axle always travels a little farther on turns than the rear). I've driven my justy in 4wd on pavement, and it does not like it (the 4wd actuator was stuck and would not go into 2wd). the gears howled when decelerating, and the wheels jump when turning corners. Not good for the car at all. If you want the additional grip of four wheels on pavement you want an all wheel drive car instead of a four wheel drive one... If you are off road, the 4 wheel drive is better (because you will spin at least two wheels, instead of just one -- though most all wheel drive cars have traction control that keeps just one wheel from spinning, but not all of them do). My justy regularly sees deep snow (over the hood sometimes -- that stops it...) and loose rocks and dirt roads, so the 4wd works fine -- usually use it several times a day. I do like AWD sometimes, but only if you have the option for a locking center differential in order to get 4wd when you need it.
Also.... have you looked underneath the justy yet? It's crammed under there and there's not alot of room down there to add anything, and the center differential would have to be added inside the transmission, not in the middle of the driveshaft. It'd be alot more work than just putting an AWD system from a EJ series subaru in there (which people have done).
