So what kind of mods have people done to rduce body roll while cornering. I'm considering stiffening up the front swaybar somehow, but i think a rear swaybar would have more impact on handling. Just looking for input at this stage.

decent bushes are a good mod, try Proflex or something similar. saying that, just putting new standard ones on makes a big difference. dont get caught out by monkeys at subaru, all the bushes have different part numbers despite most are exactly the same. the guys at the dealership i use were so confused by the jsuty setup i got the same rear sets THREE times because they cant tell the difference from the front to the rear...or was it the head from their arse?! who knows? either way "droplinks and bushes for the front antiroll bar" was taken as three sets of rear bushes

Baron; All, Any noteable issues redoing the bushings? (Besides dealer staff unable to support Subaru's red headed JUSTY step child ). I recall on another application, the bushing 'housing'/'brackets' were bent/distorted, unable to accomodate new bushings due to metal to metal friction. (Hard to guage until its all apart - stuck working on it in ~30 degree temps ). Has anyone successfully swapped in urethanes? I'll try to size out Prothane brand bits today at the general motorsports distributor... Thx, #891989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 126, 711 miles

hmm, what if those mounts on the front of the car are rusted off? It is still held on by the ends coming from the lower A-arms, but the mounts right under the radiator, and the other side are gone. I've heard of one guy getting stiff enough springs to rally race and have no sway-bar at all.

Common problem, there is a thread referencing this somewhere on here. You would need to weld something on there to mount those rods too, a large washer maybe? That job is on my to-do list as well..

My Justy and the Justy of one of my neighbours both have hanging anti-roll bars. Before I bought my Justy I wondered why the heck he didn't bolt-up his sway-bar. Now I know that the welding is pricey, and that the car drives OK at normal speeds without the anti-roll bar. I think if anyone is going to mount stiffer bushings or a thicker anti-roll bar, they might want to also beef up the problematic frame piece onto which the anti-roll bar mounts. Has anyone done that? Or would that be a case of transferring bad karma to another place on the subframe? Peter Victoria, BC

yes there is a mod you can do, check this link at the bottom of page subarujusty.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=rally&action=display&thread=1168833171however, the weak point then becomes the drop link where the bolt joins the metal plate. (this is from experience) to strengthen this, maybe after you have broken it ( ummm... ), (you may need to press it back in its place) then, stitch weld both sides... and you will have a stronger link than before. im waiting for the next breakage

my sway bar works great Any source for poly bushings you guys know of? I have been planning a rear bar upgrade... thats the summer project along with the roll bar..

My first 88 had the sway bar mounts rusted off and I never repaired them. The car was twitchy but fine. I drove it for 5 years till the rust just ate up the rest of the car. My second an 87 was in such good shape that I decidec to fix the mounts. It does track better, it's more stable in a cross wind and heavy breaking, but I think the 88 was more fun to drive. That said no one will suggest that you take the bar off intentionanlly.
By the way I assume that no one makes a rear bar kit, I have never seen one anyway.

But.....You can use the rear lower control arms, rear sway bar, sway bar brackets, and end links from a 89-94 GL Justy with either FWD or 4WD. The rear bar setup can be adapted to the 87-88 body style. I did it on my 88 4WD GL. It is, for the most part a direct bolt in except for where the brackets mount to the frame rail. I had to do a bit of fabrication work and bracing on the rear frame rails to copy the type of bracing used on the Gen 2 cars. The improved handling was worth the work. Also..Gen 1 cars (87-88) use a hollow front sway bar. The above mentioned Gen 2 Justys use a solid steel front bar. I decided to installed a solid front bar from a 91 Justy GL on my 88 and found it was a direct bolt in with no modification needed what so ever. My Justy carves the turns well now but, really could use a set of adjustable struts and performance springs to really maximize the package. Jim

has anyone tried using a strut brace that bolts in between the strut tops front and rear? wouldnt be dificult to make one, just a piece of thick tube and a couple of plates with a few holes. something like this www.mz3.net/articles/images/164-dinan_strut_brace_g.jpg but there would be no need for any curvature with the justy? on the other hand you could do the same as i am going to to, make a complete rollcage and bolt that in, surely it has to remove any flex from the body

I also made a rear bar using a Tenzo piece from a Civic as well. justy is naturally understeering, wont you need this in the rear for better driving performance (plus 4WD to RWD)?
