Hmmm, Was just rereading your posts... If you can't do more than 35 uphill alone in the car, its definitely underperforming... try the fuel filter first. A few bucks WELL spent. If you have the wife and junior in the JUSTY with you, than be happy if you can break 25 MPH on inclines. I have historically had difficulty with acceleration even with just 1 or 2 anorexic supermodels on Long Island's flat highways. Best Luck/Skill, #89

Step one : read your own thread again... Seattlejusty already told you where it is. 1st thing you can do is replace the fuel filter. Most Justys have this service item neglected and just replacing it makes your car feel 1 second faster. The filter on your car if fuel injected, will be a black metal canister located under the car in a cavity between the driver's side door and the fuel tank. If your car is carbureted then your filter will be plastic and mounted to the backside of a skidplate in the same location. Here is a link to a thread where I describe in detail, how to do this without burning your face, hands or house!!! subarujusty.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=engine&thread=1150&page=1 Good luck

Oh yes...another massive brain fart. So, I am going to look up "performance" filters, (if there are any) and my question to you is, is it recommended? I know it's not like a turbo, but would it be overkill? *a few minutes later* So I just looked at the filter, and there are 2 hoses on top of each other so, I pinch both of those hoses, correct? And, what are the proper sizes and measurements for all of the shizzle, AND hehe I noticed for example one plainjane, get the job done version for 5 bucks, and I saw a high class one but P.S.I. was involved...should I gander? and hey, Im dumb and paranoid, I just wanna make sure I am doing it correctly...Im dumb

Please don't do that. Just buy an OEM type of filter, it's $6
The injected filter is....*squints*...tryting to remember...I think inlet and outlet on the same end, which makes it a 180 degree filter, either that or straight inline but I think it's the former. Doesn't the injected filter also have a flange on the body for mounting, guys? Help me out. The carby filter is a 90 degree inlet/outlet and is a special shape to accept the clip that holds it. I guarantee if you buy or order some "sports" filter, it will filter about as well and not mount correctly. Before you try to outsmart the Subaru engineers, just keep it stock and get it running well. Trust us!

Ok, that makes sense, well tomorow when i get paid, I'll head to the Knechts and pick it up. Would a small bottle of one of those fancy fuel cleaner additives shits really help? or should I wait until I am done with the whole tweeking-about? or is it never too late...

So, I wrote in detail the fuel filter, so yes, the inlet and outlet ARE on the same end, the only way I can describe it is the top(?) of the filter is like a 3 tier wedding cake, with the tank line going into the second tier, and the motor line is on the top tier. Now, this whole setup, including the shortass hoses, looks like no one has ever touched it. Ok, I'm sure that someone has replaced it before, but from the looks of it, not in a few years. So, should I try and replace those, or is that for a more experienced...car person heh

And the wires are damn near brand new, and they aren't rubbing on anything, I don't think.

CRAP! I just called Napa and Knechts, and they are 21.99 and 21.58, just for the filter. I can order one, but from where for, "a few dollars"?

See if you can get it online fron Olympic Brake Supply olybrake.com. Worth a try. Keep calling around, check eBay. I bought a box of six for carby cars on eBay a few years ago and paid $20 I think. Well whatever they end up costing, it.ls worth it. BTW, "rebuilt engine"<--- did I call that or what!?! Always replace the fuel filter when you buy a Justy:)

Ok, so online most places have "NPN" brand filters(which look identical to what I have) for, 27 clams, roughly, but I will check that site out right quick. AND.... 1. Yeah, the motor is still all nice and shiny, and the hoses are nice and new, and it's just a beauty contest in there, but Jesse is what you call crazy and weird, and while he went to town on the motor, he completely overlooked the fuel filter. Nuff said. 2. Did I mention there is a brand new clutch? Maybe that has something to do with it, cuz in the first 3 gears, when I shift, as I am decreasing pressure on the gas, and increasing pressure on the clutch to shift, the motors revs jump up by a few hundred, THEN drop enough to properly shift. Weird, I tell you. Like I said, Jesse is an interesting fellow.

This is my set up, the filter is before the pump and i use these one dollar see through plastic filters, i found useful to be able to see the gas and have easy access to it and to the pump. If you want to copy it just bring the pump in the engine bay and run 2 straight hoses on the original location.

Now, this whole setup, including the shortass hoses, looks like no one has ever touched it. Ok, I'm sure that someone has replaced it before Believe it or not, it may actually be original. It has happened before. I am curious, you should check for id markings when you pull it off. After the fuel filter is replaced you need to check your timing, especially if Jesse is a character. If you have never done this before let us know, and we can guide you through it. It's really simple and really important. You will need an inductive timing light/gun. You can either borrow, rent, or buy one. Cheap ones can be found at Harbor Freight and elsewhere that will work well enough for your needs. If your timing is off it can completely kill performance, and when set correctly provides instant gratification. Oh and the 1.8 L thing is probably a mix up with other Subarus. There were no 1.8L Justys, and Subaru's 1.8L engine is a completely different configuration then the Justy's set-up. The Justy is the so called "black sheep" of the Subaru family. Even dealerships often don't know much about them. Carfax is just a complilation of public and proprietary records. My guess is that in your case it has been confused with the 1.8L Subaru hatchback(1980-1989). Here's a pic of my '81 (For illustration purposes only, I don't want to drift another thread). You can probably see how a non-Subaphile might confuse them. Also, if Jesse is a friend of yours, you might ask him what he did to "rebuild" the engine. People have different ideas of what that is.

jintei; You're seriously PULLING fuel to the engine bay? You're insane! You'll run your pump out in no-time. It's way easier to push fuel then it is to pull.
