The starter on my 91 2wd 5speed(i just swapped from auto). On the key positions RUN and START the starter turns but when the car starts the starter stays running. It will turn on even in the ON position of the key switch. But if i start the car and pull off the small wire going to the starter. The starter turns off. Any ideas? Relay possibly? Thanks

When the key is on the run position your starter should not be turning the engine over. It is only supposed to be turning when it is in the start position not the run. It sounds like you are sending power straight to the starter solenoid ( the little wire) when the key is on. Did you rewire anything inside the engine bay? It sounds like there is a wiring problem on the back of the key cylinder or a wire crossed in the engine bay. Try tracing the wire coming off the starter back to the starter switch to see if it crosses any other wires or if it is your switch that is the problem.
good luck

Another really common problem with that is the ignition switch failing. There's a switch that unbolts (with a small phillips) from the back of the tumbler that you can test. You'll need to pull the column covers. -Terry

Dude, one of the previous owners actually(and quite successfully) installed a push-button starter, so you turn the key to start, but you push the button underneath the column. You can start this car with no clutch, if it is in neutral. Unfortunately, the ignition switch is shot so if you don't turn it off all the way, the fan keeps whirring and it has killed my battery...3 times, the third about 2 hours ago. Waaaay crazy.

This was my starter He fought bravely until the end. When i bought the justy i had to replace the bendix, a little later had it serviced/overhauled , (changed the carbon contacts, bushings and pinion) It lasted 4 or 5 months and began to sound ''TLACK'' when turning the key without cranking. So i took it to a proper electrician and he re-overhauled it again. this lasted more time but began to seize again lately, and i (frustrated) banged it with a pipe to revive the thing. it worked for a couple of weeks but now it died for good. I opened it Should i finally arrange its funeral?

I think you should have stopped beating that dead horse a long time ago and bought a new starter. The starter in my Justy is old as Moses and just keeps on going but I do have at least two spare starters in my garage for just-in-case. I think that is a good idea for anyone who is really into Justys long term. Don't wait for a small item to break, grab up spares now. I have spare alternators, starters, carburetors, wheel cylinders, filters etc. because when something goes wrong on a 3 day Holiday weekend.... you're without your car for many days if you have to wait for parts to be ordered.

Exactly, i asked at a dealership and they said it costs $580 bucks. i asked the attendant if they have ever sold one, he looked in the system and found they have only sold 2, one in 1989 and another on 2005.....Probably to an old granny. i would have to sell the justy to buy the starter.

ok, i found a second hand starter for only 70 bucks This one sometimes cranks and sometimes only spins without making contact on the flywheel. Should i place the old starter bendix on it? did i left a cable loose?

''UPDATE'' i swaped the bendix and the problem persists.... .........i guess the problem is the starter itself...

Yeah, every time i asked for a starter on stores they asked if it was for a manual or automatic. sometimes they asked how many doors.... i cant imagine a difference there...

There's only a difference between manual and automatic. I don't know the exact difference, but i do know that the starter of an automatic is located more to the from, in front of the engine support.

Balls. So i was just driving along all as normal. I park my justy and it waits while i play a game of tennis. I come back and turn my key to the on position and flick my starter switch that the previous owner installed and... nothing. Wtf? The battery died last week so I think it may be a dead battery. I get my friend to try and jump me to no avail. SO i get pushed down the hill and start it by letting the clucth out quickly and drive home. I get home and the car starter still will not turn. I turn off all my lights lift the ebrake and get out to notice my parking lights are still on>? I can see my plate because the plate lights are still on. So i disconnect the battery as this is the only way to turn them off. Wtf is going on Any help anyone?
