No such thing as silly questions! How is it going? WE are all still patiently waiting pics of the tank and fuel system for your CNG system, please. We just had our first major snow fall here in Calgary yesterday, 100mm and I only engaged the 4WD to get out of an inclined parking space.I would only drive with 4WD on Severe winter road conditions and loose gravel roads myself. Inother words I drive in front WD most of time.I regularily engage the BUTTON at 20 kilometers and on my ECVT it engaged with my knee at 50 kms a few times without ill effect. I beleive that what Subie intended for Our car is that it be driven in 2WD most of the time and when you see a ruff, muddy, slippery spot I would gear down to 2nd gear and at low rpm before engaging the BUTTON!

I hit many snowy/icey patches whilst driving across Canada. I'd engage 4WD at speeds up to 110 KM/H as long as I was travelling in a straight line. All I do is let off the accelerator a tad for smooth engages every time.

It does say in the owners manual you can switch between 2WD to 4WD whilst moving, you just have to take your foot off the accelorator pedal. So yeah as justyjon said you can drive with it on, but try to keep it in a straight line.

Hello All Justyfriends I have a question if there is any issue with useing the 4WD on asphalt. Ive recently bought a Subaru Justy 1.2i 4wd with MT and it works perfect, but today ive activated the 4wd knob and it worked finealong ive drove i through the city...then later when i came home and did a very slow speed (e.g 1 km/h) 90 degre lefthandturn into the parkinglot it was then ive experienced a strange thing the Justy behaved like the reardiff was locked 100% like it was welded and when i stoped the car it was hard to turn off the 4wd... Is my reardiff or such about to break in the planetgears?, or is the 4wd function not suited for Asphalt use? I also wonder if anybody can recomend a Servicebook or manual where i can see a picture of the internals in the Justy's transaxle and gearbox? Please help me Yours Per

DON"T USE THE 4WD ON ASPHALT! The Justy has no center diff so the axles cannot turn at different speeds you will break things. On the plus side this means there is a 50/50 power split front to rear so it makes for amazing drifts on slippery surfaces such as dirt and snow.

you know, i disagree with the 4wd being hard on asphalt heres why.
yes the center diff is locked meaning the front and rear "drive shafts" (just follow along on tht one) are spinning at the same speed always, it does not mean that the wheels are.
note we have open front/rear diffs. my thought is that the differential being completely open will suck up the difference in wheel speeds and be just fine.
if it were true that this were bad, or some how had a negative affect on the 4wd a wheel at some point would "skip" "hop" or bounce as if it were not allowed to rotate as far as it needed to.
i think that its fine. ive never had a problem with it and i used it on asphalt all the time. namely when on huge hills and such in seattle. put her in 4wd, drop the clutch and watch it climb up anything. ive also used it on the freeway at 75mph in really heavy deep rain (probably 75 wasnt smart but it was ok with the 4wd activated)

Please scroll up and review the terrific and accurate post from Indikid, he hit the nail on the head. Streetruler, the Justy doesn't have any center differential at all. None. Zippo. The front tire and the rear tire are locked. the front tire and the rear tire need to spin at different speeds. Because the front tire and rear tire are locked (no center differential) they cannot spin at different speeds. This is why I see so many 4X4 Justys in Puget Sound junkyards with toasted front hubs.

what im saying is that the drive shafts will turn the differentials (front and rear...NOT CENTER) will eat up the difference in wheel speed or in this case the lack of difference in wheel speed.

Nope. the differentials only differentiate between left and right, not between front and rear. Dig? You see the front differntial swaps torque between left-front and right-front. The rear differential swaps torque between left-rear and right-rear. There is no mechanical give-way that swaps torque between right-front and left-rear. They are locked. On soft or slick surfaces like loose dirt or snow, the give-way is the road. On hard surfaces like tarmac (wet or dry) the give-way is a stripped out hub and a phonecall to AAA.

OK keep driving on tarmac with the 4wd drive engaged while your at it why don't you pull the E-brake around every corner to get a good drift going, but don't say we didn't warn you.

i actually do that in the rain for shits. i get bored driving this car. You obviously have so much disdain for this car I seriously cannot understand why you post on this board. You contribute more half-truths and false information than almost any other active member and you shun the good-sense advice and superior experience of knowledgeable Justy owners. I think you come here just to antagonize the rest of us. When you registered last Halloween either the trick was on us or else nobody invited you to any parties.

I believe the 4wd Justy to be the cadillac of all beaters....it is, truly! After owning my last three vehicles, I truly think that I will never buy another newer vechicle again...ever!! It is so much more environmentally sound to "adopt" an older vehicle, already on the road. I, for one, do not consider a nice, shinny, new auto to be of value. Instead, I have my motos - they, on the other hand, demand more of my money :/ Plus, they have so much more character than a new vehicle! I also like the feeling of first getting the used vehicle and going through, detailing, tune-ups and fluid changes...it's like taking care of something alive Even though you may consider these beaters, they are fundamentally just as equal as any vehicle. I think it is quite funny the way the world works. American society's desire to create the ideal image is madness. With material possessions driving complete control over the actions of individuals, it is easy to transform our wants and desires to our needs. We work so we can buy. We buy so we can impress. We impress to be better than he/she. To what end?!? A world-wide paradigm shift is on the horizon and we (americans) have front row seats to this specticular and much needed change. Events already in motion now, will have such profound effects on our population and world that humanity will be awaken from the pseudo lives directed by materialism and technology ,that we once lived. wow, sorry for my little rant here, just thought I'd share some thoughts I had while reading streetruler's comments about driving a beater and his awesomeness to follow. -Adam
