so every time i start from a stop in 1st gear i get this strange sound. it sounds like a really low "uuuurrrrrrrrrrt" and it sounds as if something is "walking around". i have a feeling its a mount or something that is bad and allowing the motor/trans to walk around.
the sound is most prevelant under a "hard" launch from a stop and inn the drivers side (left) front. it doesnt make the sound in 4wd.
any ideas what it could be?

have you checked the driveshaft-covers in the front? - they use to tear out.

I think 1200gli means the CV-boots. I doubt that the axles have anything to do with this. I suspect that it is probably a bad engine/transmission mount or possibly a bad exhaust hanger.

for me it was a drive shaft, which looked and felt fine AND was new according to the guy I bought the car from. I replaced, brakes, wheel bearings, checked the hubs, rear drive line, even replaced the trans (though not because of the sound), and checked all mounts. When I changed out the axle, the sound when away. mine was on acceleration, much less so in 4x4. -bad news is it sounds like it is coming back again, and the axle was supposedly new, not rebuilt

There are no new Justy axles. They are all rebuilt.

I go through cv's like nobodys biz,at least 1ns a year, i get new ones not built by subaru tho. the main thing is to make sure you get the spline correct or you will waste bearings,I had this prob to start with, the 1200 gl cv fits the hub spline seemingly but it has less teeth than the 4wd 1200 one so it totally wrecked my bearing. it is hard to get original suby parts 4 justys and they are hellishly expensive but the good news is you can get really strong aftermarket stuff made by others you just need to be meticulous with all details otherwise you will have no end of nightmares. souns like a wheel bearing to me
