I have a tempermental ignition switch, when i turn the key to start i usually have nothing unless i turn it a certain way and apply pressure. Now its having trouble working at all, im wondering if installing a switch to the starter would help. a bypass switch so i can put the key in the start postion and press the button to start it.
Please any help would be awesome.
or would a new ignition switch be easier? Because i need to fix it asap so i have a working car again

It is not too hard to swap the switch, once you find one. Not sure if it would be available from the dealer, but if it was, probably big $. Off to the wreckers....

I had to change mine after somebody broke off a pair of scissors trying to steal my trusty rusty justy. There are 4 bots that hold the ingnition lock assembly to the column. 2 of them have lead driven into the head, This makes it impossible to remove these 2 bolts with a wrench!.I drilled them out with a cordless drill and then removed what was left of the bolts with a pair of vise grips. Iam telling you this so that you will be prepared if searching the wreckers for the parts.....bring a drill, visegrips and save those 2 good bolts...u will need em!.

Hmm, I didn't have to drill anything out, is there different setups maybe?

Mine was the same set up as mentioned. I was able to remove 2 by socket driven allen wrench and had to cut the other 2 because they were sealed heads. I got lucky and bought mine off of EBAY for $15+shipping. It took longer removing the plastic coverings around the steering wheel than to remove the switch assembly.

Oh man, you found an ignition switch for $15?! I scoured ebay for days looking for one and nothing came up. Went to the dealer and paid $116 for a new one; but I'm glad I got it when I did, because the guy at the dealership parts place said his database was showing that there were only 4 of these still available in the country brand new from a dealer! And forget trying to find one at a wrecking yard; they NEVER have the keys with them. Good score Ronan!

Ok, this will go to anyone with internal knowledge of the picker yards. Why don't they leave the keys in the ignition???

I worked in wrecking yards for 4 years... It's usually the tow truck drivers fault. -Terry

I got a SWITCH, not the LOCK part for about $20 at RockAuto for my 89 GL hatchback. That goes on the back of the lock part with 2 screws. Has a push on connector for the wires too. I haven't put it on yet, but it's supposed to fit. Claims to be ACdelco too!
Right now, I'm using a pushbutton switch bypass for the starter. Brought the wires into the car right by the hood hinge. They run through the door opening , across the dash , and end up taped to the shift lever. Handy and sexy.

Easier to check this first than replace the ignition switch and then go "dammit" when it does the same thing.

never have a huge ring of keys hanging and bouncing on the ignitions switch because they wear out fast that way. I find it easier to get an after market ignition switch and and wire right into it, mount it some where and leave the stock switch in place.
