Howdee guys. I am new to posting though I have been reading for a long time. I want to take a moment to thank you for your info. I have many answers from this forum.
First I will explain that I bought my Justy new in 1991. It was my wife's car and served her well. At I believe 72,000 miles the ECVT went bad. This was 1999 I believe. That's when I started hearing the bad stories about the ECVT. Subaru had little time for the Justy and 3 dealers all said the same thing. Big bucks and small warranty for a new or rebuilt ECVT. I looked for a manual trans to swap as my car is in great shape. But nothing reasonably priced showed up. I put the car in storage and went on to many other more pressing projects.
About 2 months ago I started calling wrecking yards as I do every two or three years, looking for a parts car. After calling 32 yards I struck gold. The guy on the phone said he was sure they had one, a '90. While he sent someone to check he read the sheet they keep on each vehicle. He read yes it had 5spd, bad engine, and oh it has 4wd.
While trying not to yell "YES" at the top of my lungs I think I acted indifferent to the 4wd. Saying something like "Oh I guess I could work with that" and sounding like I was annoyed. Far from it , despite a storm system I headed 35 miles to the yard that afternoon. It was red and complete except for wheels and hood.
I quickly made a deal and started removing and checking parts. Over the next 3 weeks and 4 trips I got everything I needed. I hope. Also as they wanted to get rid of as much as they could at once they offered me the whole engine, front suspension package disc brake to disc brake for scrap prices and loaded as a unit in my trailer.
Then my daily driver/rust ball pickup blew a clutch and then I tore up my knee. I am better and have started cleaning and sorting parts. Next I am bringing home the '91 to start this project in earnest.
I am going to take pictures and answer questions you might have. I probably might have some questions for you guys.
Oh BTW when the ECVT went down I bought the first 2 shop manuals. Well I recently found the last 3 are unavailable. I asked the local dealer and he loaned me the books which I scanned into my 'puter. That was a project!!!
This would be a nightmare without those books.
Stay tuned, Keith
