Hi all, I´m new here on this forum. I got my first Justy GL 1.2 just few weeks ago. It´s a 1990 4wd carb, it has only 110,000 km (69,000 miles) on the clock .
Okay, one of the (many) reasons I bought it was because I thought it would be extremely economical to have, but unfortunately I can only do barely 10L/100km (23.5mpg) on it, during the summer time. That´s almost the same as my Legacy does, so there must be something I can do to improve the fuel economy.
I´ve already changed the spark plugs, wires, cap + rotor arm, but that doesn´t seem to have helped a lot.
Any ideas what I can do more to improve fuel economy?

Welcome dabbi, Any ideas what I can do more to improve fuel economy? Well not yet but, I can help Justyfy your poor economy(assuming manual transmission); -The 1.2L gets nearly 1hp/cu inch; not many other engines get that type of performance/displacement stock. -Your 1990 must be a 2nd gen model??(300 lbs(ish) heavier than 1rst gen) -Carbed Justy can't compete with maintenance schedule of FI models not to mention efficiency of atomization -4wd models have much higher gear ratios than 2wd trannys and are also heavier. IMO the 5th gear is much too high and yields the best results under 80km/hr or 50mph What to do? -Check and adjust timing, -Clean, rebuild carb?, -Change tranny and diff oil, -Air filter, -set idle speed lower if out of spec Of course my driving habits have changed as well; -coast to stops at idle, -downhill at idle, -lower highway speeds, -proper tire pressure, -long coasts with engine off, -so on,, What else, stacks Stacks, buddy, I have to take issue with just a few things you said above. - I can help Justyfy your poor economy(assuming manual transmission)
Actually, automatic Justys got the same mileage and same performance as the 5-speed cars did. This was one of the really impressive things about the ECVT technology... too bad it took 20 years to work out.
- -Your 1990 must be a 2nd gen model??(300 lbs(ish) heavier than 1rst gen)
This is rather presumptuous. The +300 LB Justy is only the 5-door 4X4. If he has a Gen2-DL it would weigh little more than a Gen-1 car.
- -Carbed Justy can't compete with maintenance schedule of FI models not to mention efficiency of atomization
Y'know this sounds really great on paper but it real life, carb'd Justys tend to get better mileage on average. Although technically capable of achieving equal mileage, when surveyed, EFI Justy owners report fewer MPG's compared to carby cars. Just do a search on this forum dating back 400 days and read all of the entries. My Gen-1 DL kicks my Gen-2 GL EFI's butt in economy.
- -4wd models have much higher gear ratios than 2wd trannys and are also heavier. IMO the 5th gear is much too high and yields the best results under 80km/hr or 50mph
Dude, you are misinformed. The Gen-2 4X4's have taller overdrives (4th and 5th gears) to compensate for their lower ring & pinion (5.2:1) 2WD Justys have shorter overdrives (4th and 5th gears) because their ring & pinion is much taller (4.44:1) All in all, you are turning nearly the same RPM at freeway speed, let's take one more look at what you said...IMO the 5th gear is much too high..., well 60MPH puts you near 3400RPM, if that's "too high" then maybe I can interest you in a motorcycle engine. I'm sure with lower gears you could put around at 8000RPM if that'll make you happy.
- The 1.2L gets nearly 1hp/cu inch; not many other engines get that type of performance/displacement stock.
This one is my favorite statement because it shows you either get your car facts from your grandpa or else you read too many hot rod magazines because this yardstick is about 30 years out of date. Let's go back 10-15+ years and look at what kind of power engines were putting out:
- 94-99 Neon / 122 C.I.D. ~ 132 HP
- 88-91 Civic / 91 C.I.D. ~ 92 HP
- 84-89 MR2 / 98 C.I.D. ~ 112 HP
- 94-97 Sephia/98 C.I.D. ~ 105 HP
- 99-2002 Esteem 110 C.I.D. ~ 122 HP
This is not an extensive list at all. I could probably list four dozen cars available in North America alone that meet or beat 1HP/C.I.D. but the above are very common cars and can be had for a few hundred dollars right now. The point is, in this day and age, it is no longer impressive to make 1HP/cubic cinch but rather to achieve 100HP per liter.
Cheers

thank you guys for all that information yes it´s a 5door manual, I have got new oil in the motor, tranny and diff oil. Also air filter but i have not yet replaced the fuel filter - can that affect the fuel economy? The car is running fine now but sometimes it´s hesitating and spluttering the first few miles when it´s cold and moisture outside. I´ve noticed that the engine takes quite long time to get "hot", then I mean the normal running temperature. You think that is normal?

I´ve noticed that the engine takes quite long time to get "hot", then I mean the normal running temperature. You think that is normal? The fuel filter will absolutely affect the performance and fuel economy of your Justy. It is the 1st thing that should be replaced on any newly acquired Justy because they usually go neglected. As far as your Justy taking a long time to warm up, I have two things to say about that; - Replace your thermostat. Justy thermostats all break eventually and at $6, should not even be tested, just replace it as insurance. If it is broken "shut" (like mine did last year) then your engine will run hot. If it is broken "open" then your engine can take a very long time to warm up.
- Secondly, make it practice to move your heater valve to the closed position before even starting your engine. This is the East/West sliding lever on your dash that will have a blue and red stripe corresponding to hot/cold.
When that valve is "open" (all the way to the red) it is allowing your coolant to flow through your heater core. This is essentially a second radiator and it will double or triple the number of miles/minutes needed to get up to operating temperature. Once your temperature gauge registers almost a third travel, you are pretty safe to go ahead and open up that valve & enjoy some heat
Good luck

What's up SJ, where ya been? Turns out we're both wrong 'bout the 4x4 vs. 2wd gearboxes; my manual lists all the 5 gears plus reverse as identical... 5.285:1 for us 4wheelers compared to 4.800 for 2wheel. That's a final drive ratio with every other gear the same. Nothing against ECVTs but now's really not the time to weigh in with your funky limitless ratios, stacks So.... 4X4 = 5.20:1 2WD=4.44:1

Stacks, I have to give credit where credit is due. After closer inspection it appears that Subaru blessed the Justy with a clever air-separator instead of a fluid valve. My honest mistake as it is a very common design for car heaters to use a valve that controls flow of coolant to the heater core (matrix). So, on the record: Stacks is right, the Justy does not have a mechanical coolant valve. However, if an impatient person starts up a cold Justy and moves the heater slide to the "hot" position and then runs the fan, they are in fact using the heater core as a second radiator and thus slowing down the warm up process. So my advice for all car owners stands only in this case (J12 cars) the position of the hot/cold slide doesn't matter as much unless the fan motor is run. Z'at make sense kiddies?

Another member, Izimo, who has the balls to shoot the dash while full out(nice work BTW) and drives a GenI,2wd revved 5150(ish) rpm @ 160 speedo speed: Yeah, I own a set of jackstands too

I am getting poor fuel economy too. I have a 90 4wd Fuel injected multi port. 3 Door model
I am getting about 9.50 kms to the litre. and most of that was on the highway. I get much worse in town.
After reading the posts, am I to understand I may be changing gears wrong? Need help, I just bought this car and I like except the range I am getting out of it. Thanks
