Hi I married into a 94 Subaru Justy with the 5-speed. I love this car 115,xxx miles and going strong! 40mpg even. We recently had the head rebuilt and now the check engine light is on and giving a code 13, TDC sensor.
First we checked and made sure we had all the electrical connectors plugged in correctly looks good to me. Then we replaced the distributor which houses the TDC sensor, then we replaced the ECU. And finally I just wired the 4 wires from the distributor straight to the appropiate pins on the ECU and still the light comes on.
We tripple checked the timing on the engine. All the marks on the Crankshaft, Camshaft etc line up. All my service manuals say to set #3 cyl on Top Dead Center but the car will not start this way. The only way the car runs is with the Distributor pointing to #1 Top Dead Center.
I'm ready to give up and unplug the bulb from the Check Engine Light. Anyone have any advice. I can provide much more info and even pics if anyone can help. Thanks, Ryan funtruck2002@yahoo.com

Have you checked the wiring between the distributor and the ECU for continuity or shorts? If you unplug the 26 pin connector from the ECU pins 5 and 6 are the two wires from the distributor that you'll need to check.

Yes. I have the same problem. My car runs fine but that darn light is on and it reads 13. The factory service manual says that the symptom is"Engine stall during idle, erroneous idling or engine operation at speeds less than 2,000 rpm" Mine does'nt have that problem. To check the connections you need a high-impedance voltmeter(set below the 0.5 range) Let me know if you want the specific wires and resistance specs.

Yeah, I tried all that. I've got all the wiring diagrams and resistance tests. The four wires coming from the distributor are red, green, black and white. Those same four wires run through the wiring harness through the firewall and appear at the ECU in a Stainless Steel Braided bundle. I've checked the ECU pins 5,6 and I think 7 and 8 are part of it also. I've tried bypassing the existing wiring harness and running my own four red, green, black and white wires to the ECU but to no avail.
I don't know if the timing (distributor) is 180 deg. out. I'm not to familiar with 3 cylinders. The car still runs good but in closed loop mode with the Check Engine Light on. Any other ideas?

I know. the check engine light drives me crazy too. I'm going to wait to fix mine, as mine has other issues(axle noise) But mine's running pretty good so I'm going to close my eyes while I'm driving. We haven't had much snow here in SE Ohio, just buckets of rain. Good luck. Tom
